“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross.” Colossians 1:15-20 (ESV)
The image of the invisible God; I’ve always loved that verse. To put it simply, God cannot be seen. At least not by man. His glory is more than we can handle. He said so. That’s the beauty of Jesus: he is God. Jesus is the human incarnation of a God we would not be able to see otherwise. He says that “if you’ve seen me you’ve seen the Father,” and also “I and the Father are one.” In the text above, it explains the incarnation by saying “in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell.” How is the incarnation even possible? I have no idea. I know that “with God all things are possible.” It’s not just possible, but God was pleased to dwell in Jesus Christ. So Jesus is the God we can see. That was God’s plan. God wants us to find him. He made it possible, even easy. Jesus humbled himself to be a servant, obedient to the point of death, even death on the cross, according to Philippians 2. God wants us to find him so much that he stood before us in the man Jesus Christ and said “Look at me, I’m standing right here.” And was executed as a blasphemer for doing it.
But if you want to know what God looks like (as in what he thinks, how he treats people, what kind of people he wants us to be, etc.) look at Jesus. All of us are made in God’s image; Jesus even more so.
Oh, I do believe this is my first post on your site!! WOW! I just couldn’t resist. You know, I really like that verse, it makes me think of Moses when He saw the face of God. I mean the dude could bearly stand it-He was so blown away by the glory of God. I think that’s WHY we can’t see God, we just wouldn’t be able to handle it. That’s why God gave us Jesus!
Thanks for making me think.
