25 Years of Ministry

I saw a blog post for the 25th anniversary of Bible Gateway yesterday and gave them a shout out. I’m celebrating an anniversary of sorts myself this month. In January 1993 I announced a call to preach. I’m not sure of the exact date and taking a look at a January ’93 calendar didn’t help. That doesn’t really matter though. 25 years ago I told our church family that God was calling me into ministry and I was ready to answer that call. So here’s a brief recap of what God has done in my life since then. Continue reading

Happy 25th Bible Gateway!

Screenshot 2018-01-22 at 11.01.01 AMThe Master’s Table will soon celebrate 10 years. How many websites from 25 years ago are still around today? That was 1993, there was barely in internet 25 years ago. Browsers like Netscape Navigator have come and gone since then and some early web successes, like Napster and MySpace, soared in popularity and faded away slowly. Whatever happened to AOL?

Bible Gateway is celebrating 25 years and inviting all of us to celebrate with them. Click here to read more at the Bible Gateway blog. The Master’s Table is pleased to partner with Bible Gateway as we share Good News. I personally use Bible Gateway to study and prepare sermons, not just for blog posts. You will find them listed in “Useful Resources” on the right-hand sidebar and a link for the Bible Gateway Blogger Grid.

Water in the Bible: Boating and Fishing

Screenshot 2018-01-19 at 11.41.08 AMThe Bible has a lot to say about about water. The message of scripture is framed in many different ways in order that as many people as possible understand. Everything from kings and their armies to a woman sweeping the floor is used to illustrate what the Kingdom of God is like. Jesus told parables about sowing seeds, harvesting grain, searching for pearls, buying oil for lamps, all things that regular people could understand. It should come as no surprise then that water is used in the Old and New Testaments because every living thing needs water. But I want to focus more specifically on the things people do in or on the water. Continue reading

Final Thoughts: Epiphany

Screenshot 2018-01-09 at 2.57.29 PMMany Christians celebrate Epiphany on the Sunday after January 6th. Sometimes my mind makes connections between things that others may have thought unrelated. Maybe we all do that, working in what some describe as thought webs, but I’m about to submit one such thought for your consideration.

Matthew 2:1-12 is the Gospel account of the wise men’s visit. Ephesians 2:11-21 describes how all believers are one in Christ. Verse 17 in particular says that Jesus has preached peace to those that were far away and those that were near. Consider how the Christmas narrative illustrates that point. Continue reading

You know it’s cold outside when:

In the deep South we’ve been fortunate with lows in the mid teens. Tampa Bay, FL and Charleston, SC saw snow last week. On a serious note, let’s be in prayer for all those affected by weather. Looks like this season could be a rough one. Meanwhile we will carry on; Welcome to Happy Monday. Continue reading
