Psalm 118:24. It’s a very well known text and often used as a call to worship, a rallying cry to get church members stirred up. I’m sure we have used it more than once over the years in our Happy Monday posts. We began our annual Rome Prayer Breakfast yesterday morning by saying this verse together, a couple of times. And during that meeting it’s meaning struck me in a new way. The Bible is like that; no matter how many times you read the Word it will never quit speaking to you.
Yesterday was a day the Lord had made. After two cups of coffee and a Chick-fil-A biscuit I was ready to hear John O’Leary. We had already been led in prayer several times, I was sitting at a table with friends, I think I mentioned the coffee… I was in the zone so to speak. I was aware of God’s amazing grace all around me in every little thing. I set my phone to remind me the next morning (this morning) that “This is the day the Lord has made.” My phone gave me the option to repeat daily, weekly, etc. The duration for repeating the message was by default to “forever.” I was struck with what felt like a profound realization that yesterday, today, tomorrow and each day after that in finitum are days the Lord has made (is making, will make). Think about this day. He made it. The sun came up at his will. You are awake because he has blessed you with the miracle of life. It’s his day, we live in his world, we are the craftsmanship of his hand. We can accept that and work with him, we can complain about all that has to be done, we can curse God and tell him how life is unfair and that we hate him… and it will still be the day he has made.
On the days the sun comes up, the summer morning is a cool 60 degrees, the birds are singing and the coffee is hot, the Lord made that. On the days that I sleep in, draw the curtains tighter and don’t want to get up at all, the Lord made that day as well. On the days the car doesn’t start, we are out of coffee, my phone wasn’t charged overnight and all the milk is gone… guess who made that day. They are all his days and for a limited amount of time we get to live in them. On the days I read from the Psalms, hum a tune all day long and acknowledge God at every turn, that’s a day he made. On the day I grumbled all day and don’t want to think about God or anything else… also a day he made. They are his days, it’s his world, we are his and he has called us. He has called us first into salvation, into his marvelous light, and then called us into his service. Be a blessing to others and love your neighbor. Share the Gospel. Do good works before others so they can see them and give glory to the Father in Heaven.
This is the day the Lord has made. We can rejoice, we can complain. We can be glad, we can be grouches. Everyday will not feel like sunshine and butterflies but all the days are his. Just something to think about.
