After trailing China for two weeks, sometimes by quite a bit, the United States pulled ahead in the gold medal count to finish with 39. The US won a total of 113 total medals, fewer than some recent Olympic Games despite there being more events in Tokyo than ever before. The hardware was more evenly spread out in these games, with more countries winning at least one medal than ever before.
