I often tell people that I’ve learned two great lessons in life. I can’t think of the first one right now but the second is that I have to start writing stuff down. The biggest lie I tell myself is that if I have an idea for a sermon illustration or a topic for a blog post I will remember it when I need to. That’s just not true. So I’ve decided going forward that if I have an idea, a clever thought for an illustration, even a single point that might become an outline, I’m going to go ahead and drop them here. Instead of waiting for posts to magically finish themselves I will share ideas that you might see again someday as a complete article.
When I preach or teach from Acts 2, I point out that Peter refers to David as a prophet. I recently preached through Jonah, who thought he could flee from the Lord’s presence. David knew better. Despiste living in Israel before the Temple was built, David wrote that if he went up to the heavens, down to the grave or into the sea there was nowhere to escape from God’s spirit.
Where shall I go from your Spirit?
Or where shall I flee from your presence?
8 If I ascend to heaven, you are there!
If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!
9 If I take the wings of the morning
and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
10 even there your hand shall lead me,
and your right hand shall hold me.
-Psalm 119:7-10
David was not reading God’s Spirit for Dummies or The Completed Idiot’s Guide to YHWH. David was in the honors program taking advancement placement courses. His level of understanding was beyond most of those of his time. Go back to Psalm 1. His delight is in the law of the Lord and in it he meditates day and night. David’s desire was to know more about God, to dwell in his Word and learn his ways. If you seek God you will find him. If you want to know him more that’s also what he wants! True today as it was in David’s time.
