Did you know? The Olympic rings symbolize unity by being interconnected and each ring represents a continent. North and South America are together, Australia is sometimes referred to Oceania and Antarctica has no permanent residents. For Team USA fans, Lindsey Jacobellis wins gold in women’s snowboardcross and then again with teammate Nick Bumgardner in mixed snowboardcross. For Jacobellis at 36, and Bumgardner at 40, this is the probably their last Olympics. Germany, Norway and the US are 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the gold medal count at my time of publication. When Denyse Holt did not send her daily Wordle, her daughter had a neighbor check on her. Her car was at the house but no one answered the door. That’s when Meredith Holt-Caldwell called police. Holt was being held in her home against her will and after a 6 hour police standoff, she is free and a suspect is behind bars. I would say that has more to do with keeping a regular routine than the actual Wordle game but let it have its 15 minutes. At least it’s still free.
Speaking of the New York Times (which recently purchased Wordle) they pulled off a neat trick with the nation’s most famous crossword puzzle this week. Whether you consider Star Trek or Star Wars the better franchise, either answer works in the puzzle. The four clues going down also work both ways, whether you spelled TREK or WARS at the intersections. Very clever.
Reverend Andres Arango of Phoenix, Arizona has resigned over what many consider a grammatical error. For 20 years he has been saying “We baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit” and he should have been saying “I baptize you.” According to Catholic Church officials the wording matters because it is not the community baptizing a person into the faith but Christ alone. Arango may have performed the sacrament incorrectly thousands of times over the years and says he will work now to heal those affected. “If you were baptized using the wrong words, that means your baptism is invalid, and you are not baptized. You will need to be baptized,” the diocese said.
Cause of death determined for Bob Saget. Subdermal hemostasis means that a bleed, caused by a blow to the back of the head, put pressure on the brain. If you’ve ever had a twisted ankle swell up that’s the same kind of thing but your skull is rigid and a swelling brain has nowhere to go. The impact to the back of his head must have been severe, fracturing the bone in multiple places. Even if he had sought medical treatment there is no way of knowing if the outcome would have been any different. He was taking medication, had a blockage in an artery of the heart and was Covid positive at the time of his death but none of those things were contributing factors.
If you’re into the Oscars you probably already know that 2022 nominations are out. If you’re not into following the Oscars you probably don’t care. Nicole Kidman is nominated as Best Actress for her role as Lucille Ball in Being the Ricardos as is Jessica Chastain for her portrayal in The Eyes of Tammy Faye. I might get around to seeing those two films, eventually.
Matt Groening says he’s excited about another go at Futurama before they get abruptly cancelled, again. If you’re worried about the voice cast, John DiMaggio has not committed yet but it’s not a hard no either. Look for 20 new episodes in 2023.
Does this week’s post seem long to you?
Atari held the first video game tournament in 1980. Just look at all those CRT’s. When I was a kid most people only had one t.v. per home and only “rich people” had a second television or two phone lines.
Speaking of video games:
The Sphinx, with the head of a king and body of a lion, has a tail. Did you know the Sphinx has a tail? Lions have tails so it stands to reason but we usually don’t get this angle. The Sphinx and Great Pyramids are usually photographed so they appear isolated in the desert but you can clearly see a city landscape in the image above. As a matter of fact you get a pretty good view of the surviving Wonders of the world from inside the local Pizza Hut.
I have a couple more things that we’ll save until next week. This is a longer Deja-Vu than usual and there were more new posts than usual this week on The Master’s Table. Check out Steve Brown Etc. and There is Risk Involved if you missed those. Van Til will be in Monday morning to talk Super Bowl LVI.
