Old School Wordle – Paul Wilkinson reminds us that before Wordle became the hottest thing since the Internet wordles were also known as word clouds or tag clouds. The more frequently a word occurs the more prominently it appears in the wordle. The one above is based on the whole Bible.
Dolly Parton is a national treasure. Inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame last year after trying to remove herself from consideration, she initially planned to release a rock and roll album to legitimize the recognition. In this video she watches fans cover her classic songs and critiques the performances. Dolly’s critiques though tend to make people feel better about themselves.
Compulsory voting – We hear a lot about our right to vote in contrast to others who never get the chance. There is a third category. In about 27% of nations in the world, shown above in purple, voting is a legal requirement. We struggle to get greater than 50% voter turnout even during presidential election cycles but others face fines or even jail time for not casting a ballot. Some nations have laws on the books but we see no evidence of enforcement.
I will not die for Putin. The numbers vary depending on source but as many as 1,300 protestors have been arrested across Russia for protesting the newly imposed military draft. Thousands of others have fled/are fleeing to avoid being conscripted into service to fight the war in Ukraine.
Another Night at the Warp Core Cafe – Here is your nerdy thing for the week. Click on the image to view full size. You should be able to further zoom in without losing clarity. The TARDIS, Superman and an Imperial Star Destroyer should be easy to find. Other characters from sci-fi lore include ET, Howard the Duck, Alf, Guinan, Wally, Eva and, I’m not kidding, Lion-O from the Thundercats. Mork from Ork is in there. The longer the look the more you see. Click this link to view the largest image in the best resolution possible.
Government cheese – Americans of a certain age remember a USDA subsidy product known affectionately as government cheese. You may have eaten as a child in public school cafeteria. My grandmother used to get a block of this once every quarter in a box of food stuff given to senior citizens. I had a friend in real life ask this week if you could buy this anywhere. Legally you could never buy it – you had to earn it by being in need of food assistance. Having said that, Wahlburger tops their hamburgers witha premium cheddar cheese that many claim brings back fond memories of government cheese. For the record, there are 1.4 billion pounds of government cheese stored in a cave in Missouri. It has been stockpiled for years and is in no danger of going bad anytime soon.
