Satur-deja Vu

The guy on the bike was Steve Jobs. When he was photographed by National Geographic in 1982 he didn’t want to pose standing with his arms cross in front of rows of computer terminals. Props for that, my opinion of him may have just gone up slightly. I tell you what though, the thing about those BMW motorcycles is they have horizontally opposed cylinders. Most American and Japanese motorcycles have two cylinder engines in what’s called a V-twin formation. The engines are pretty well oriented inside the frame. What you see next to Jobs left foot is a cylinder head sticking out farther than anything on the bike, which is just find unless you were to drop the bike and go for a slide. Since he wants to look cool for this picture he is not wearing a jacket, helmet or gloves so the damage done to that cylinder head is probably the least of his worries. The picture was probably taken at a very low shutter speed so he is probably not going as fast as the blurry background wire wheel spokes suggest. Hey kids, remember film? No, probably not. Replace shutter speed with frame rate for comparison.

Happy Monday #500 will be posted Monday morning. Happy Monday #500 is a special post that celebrates the occasion. That should clear up any confusion.

Here’s a fun fact: There have already been more than 500 Happy Monday posts. In the early days we would skip Monday holidays, like Memorial Day and Labor Day, and published a special Happy Monday on Tuesday post. There were also special editions such as Bible Reader’s or Coffee Drinker’s Edition. Anytime the title was not written as Happy Monday the counter in the URL is not affected. At some point the decision was made to post every Monday no matter what and always use the same title. Monday’s post will be business as usual. Click the link above to read up on the back story of why we take being funny so seriously. There are several links to various posts that point out different features and how things have changed over the past decade. Click this link to check out the very first Happy Monday from July of 2012. You will see a reference to My Other Blog which is dormant and The Read & Share File which, in a lot of ways, was very similar to the Satur-deja Vu.

USA Today recently published a list of the 10 best apple orchards in the US, as chosen by their readers. Mercier Orchards in Blue Ridge was ranked second and is the only orchard in Georgia to make the list. Most of the orchards listed are in the New England region and nine of the ten are east of the Mississippi River (and Jefferson, Iowa ain’t far from it). Click here to read the full list. I only noticed this story because my family was in Blue Ridge a few weeks ago, at the very beginning of apple picking season. Neato.

That’s just a still shot but you can click here to see the official trailer. Some have criticised Chris Pratt for just using his own voice and not doing trying to sound like an Italian plumber from Brooklyn. I disagree, Star Lord was Chris Pratt’s natural voice and Mario does not sound like Star Lord. Jack Black voices Bowser and there’s a full all star star cast we haven’t heard from yet. I liked the Sonic movie and Detective Pikachu, I think there’s a good chance it has to look better than this.

The Braves win the NL East, clinching the division title for the 5th consecutive season. The Braves and The Mets have identical records, 101 wins and 61 losses, but due to a rule change this year the Braves are ranked first because their head to head record is better. The Mets are one game behind the Padres in the NL Wildcard series, one of them will face the Dodgers next. The Braves will play the winner of the Phillies – Cardinals series and that’s just the National League.

The new MLB postseason has 12 teams and a World Series that will not even begin until the middle of November. The boys of summer better bundle up out there. More is always better right? I guess we’ll see.

Nice.

In the tech world that’s called a work around. As social commentary that reflects poorly on us as a society but at a pragmatic level this guy knows what works and what doesn’t. He’s not wrong and uses his understanding of human nature to his advantage. Here’s a bit of practical advice: when you are researching making a purchase it may be helpful to look at product reviews. Just keep things in perspective. There will almost always be more negative reviews than positive. When people buy a product that works, well that’s what new products are supposed to do so they use it and go on with their lives. When a person has a negative experience he or she is much more likely to take the time and effort to review the product. They have motivation to complain whereas not as many people put forth the minimal effort it takes to say something nice. The reviews still serve a purpose because if a product has real problem issues then you will at least know what those are.
