Anniversary, of Sorts

Coming up in March will be 15 years since The Master’s Table began. This week makes 26 years since my wife and I had our first date. In January I missed something of a big one. I have been preaching the Gospel for the last 30 years. I don’t know the exact date but on a Sunday morning in 1993 – I’m leaning towards the 31st – I announced the call to preach. I do remember quoting 2nd Timothy 1:9 and back then it would have been KJV:

Who has saved us and called us with an holy calling, not according to our own works, but according to his own purpose and grace, which was given us in Christ Jesus before the world began

  1. I posted to my own Facebook page, mentioning several people and places that would only matter to friends in real life. I continued on the nature of ministry in the comment section and here’s a copy and paste of those comments:

I see ads about getting ordained online so you can officiate weddings. Nobody gets an ordination certificate so they can preach funerals. Preaching is one function of ministry, there are many others. They include hospital visits and two hour phone calls where you mostly just listen. I seemed to have transitioned from leading high school kids in praise & worship to taking old ladies to doctor appointments. Every now and then you might have to let some guy sleep on your couch. Everyone sees the part where you preach 30 minutes and a line of people shake your hand. The other parts may matter more but I don’t know how to measure that.
