France is bacon – This was meant to be in last week’s post and I was disappointed later to see that I missed it somehow. In this case he only understood after seeing Francis Bacon in writing but there are often contestants on Jeopardy that pronounce a response oddly because they read a lot but may never have heard a word out loud. They allow it because there is nothing wrong with reading lots of books. Some people favor visual learning styles, others auditory, but we cannot discount the experience of hands on learning. Tactile sensation, spatial relationships; we take in the world through a variety of senses and they work well together.
Case in point – I see a correlation between this image and the first story, do you?
Trudy Cathy White is the daughter of Truett Cathy and author of four books, A Legacy that Lasts being the most recent. She is pictured above, far left. Next to her is Jonathan Purser, operator of the Calhoun, GA, Chick-fil-A. I have not read her other books but Legacy is about lessons she learned from her parents and how we should be intentional about the lessons our children learn from us. Are the things we hope to be remember for what we are actually presenting as the most important?
Some food for thought (that we were told to write down, take pictures of, and share with others).
Facebook Memories showed me this. Some events are instantaneous – the Challenger exploding, the World Trade Center collapsing – and we all remember where we were and what we were doing. Surviving the pandemic and adjusting to “a new normal” lasted for weeks that turned in months. It’s a long-term shared experience, like kids collecting cans for recycling and buying sugar and ham with ration tickets during World War II. In the fall of 2019 I started a part time job at Kroger. It wasn’t the army but I have some war stories.
Another blast from the past. Those are my Peeps. One more:
Back in 2012 or 2013 I was really proud of that. The Easter Peeps and the Truman pic (Dewey Defeats Truman was the original famously wrong headline) are not FB Memories. I saved these pics a few weeks ago. I must have gone deep into the blog archives and come across these along the way. I had actually forgotten about the Truman newspaper but I will add it to the folder with fake signs and other logos, and try not to lose it again.
The Atlanta Braves, previously the Milwaukee Braves and before that the Boston Braves, played their first game in Atlanta Stadium on April 12, 1966. They shared Atlanta Stadium with the brand new NFL team Atlanta Falcons. Braves catcher Joe Torre hit his first ever home run in the 5th inning that night… and a second hr in the 13th inning. Sadly those were the only two runs and the Braves lost to the Pirates 3 – 2. Atlanta/Fulton County Stadium would see a World Series victory in 1995, something the replacement Turner Field (inherited by the Braves after the 1996 Olympics) never did. The Braves currently lead the National League standings (it’s early but still exciting). The Tampa Bay Rays went to 13 – 0 to start the season before taking a loss just last night. The last team to do that… was Atlanta in 1983.
His name is Boom but the 10 month old English Bulldog pup will be known as Uga XI. You may recall that Uga X did not make the trip to California last fall for the College Football Championship partly due to his age. Que is retiring at the age of 9, or 63 in dog years. The breed’s life expectancy is only 8 to 10 years. A lot of success in those years:
The reason the clocks run clockwise is because that’s the direction that shadows move across sundials in the northern hemisphere. The earliest mechanical clocks were designed to move the same way just because that’s what people were used to. The check engine light on your dashboard, the save icon on your computer screen, even the idea of “hanging up” the telephone are all outdated designs that we keep around because we understand what they mean. Enter may have replaced Return on the keyboard… but we still use shift keys, just like mechanical typewriters.
This was the original I Love Lucy set. And with that, I wish you a good Saturday.
