Satur-deja Vu

I mentioned the National Day of Prayer last week and even included a link to the National Day of Prayer Task Force website. Shown above is the poster for one of two events I will be attending. The Rome Area Prayer Breakfast, which I think I mentioned, has invited Lee Strobel to speak this year. The Advent Health prayer event will have several individuals from the community offer specific prayers for ministers, educatators, government officials, etc then a corporate prayer time. Chances are there is an event in your area; check with your church leaders and extend your search to include newspaper and radio (and their respective online presence) if necessary.

Those of us in Braves country are excited as this season is off to a great start. During the first home stretch, possibly the home opener in Atlanta, a fan gave a giant cap to someone in the dugout. It was placed on the head of the first player to hit a home run shortly thereafter and a new home run celebration was born. It happened completely organically and quickly became a viral thing on the internet. That is until New Era Cap, the official cap partner of Major League Baseball, reported the celebrations to MLB. I say reported, like a crime had taken place. MLB told the Braves they could no longer wear the big cap on the field, including in the dugout, because it was not an officially licensed New Era product. Thanks New Era Cap for reminding us that baseball is a business and has nothing to do with fans or players having fun.

Someone responded to either my Facebook or Twitter post this week to say that New Era CAp is perfectly within their legal rights to protest since wearing this cap violates the terms of their exclusive agreement. Sometimes being legally right and doing what is right is not necessarily the same thing.

I don’t watch a lot of NFL games. That’s not some kind of protest, I just never have. The NFL Draft is not so much about the NFL as it is a celebration of the best players in college football starting their professional careers. UGA had three players picked up Thursday during round 1, tied with Alabama and Ohio State. The meme above makes light of how many Georgia players have been drafted by the Eagles in the past couple of years. Two of three players from round 1 went to Philadelphia and join two Georgia players that were drafted last year. Some are calling the team the Philadelphia Bulldogs while I suggest a compromise: Bird Dogs. The final rounds of the draft are today.

Vegan seat covers – My first thought was that I’ve never eaten a seat cover made from any kind of material, leather or otherwise. But I guess if you want to keep your car 100% vegan this product is for you. I’ve often said the only reason PETA protests fur and doesn’t say anything about leather is that it’s easier to harass rich, white women than the Hell’s Angels.

This is the strongest worded letter they could write while at the same time conveying no actual authority of any kind. You wouldn’t want the police to write an lawsuit.

Jerry Springer has passed at the age of 79. There are many different cancers treatments that depend on early detection but pancreatic cancer is still one with few treatment options. The same thing took Alex Trebek. I don’t want to call it a death sentence but the survival rate is low. Springer is best known for his daytime talk show that changed what daytime talk looked like, arguably for the worse. He knew the show was ridiculous but the ratings were high for the spectacle and he did know how to spot a good business opportunity when he saw one.

That’s the history lesson for this week. Car guys, look closer.

I’ve already been to a men’s prayer breakfast/Bible study this morning and have a barbecue festival to get to. I’ve been to other states outside the South, I’ve been to Europe. I don’t want to seem uncultured but I sure do like it here. Martin Luther King Jr., Jimmy Carter, Charles Stanley, Truett Cathy, Hank Aaron… just a few examples of good Christian men with deep Southern roots. Smile, God loves you. Until next time…
