Read the Bible: Exodus 5

Moses and Aaron appear before Pharaoh and ask him to let them go into the wilderness and sacrifice to the LORD God. Pharaoh does not let them go but rather increases their work load. The Hebrews are mad at Moses, the Egyptians are mad at Moses, he cries out to God that they are worse off than before; and he has no idea, God is just getting warmed up.

Exodus 5

Afterward Moses and Aaron went in and told Pharaoh “This is what the LORD God of Israel says: ‘Let my people go, that they may hold a feast to me in the wilderness.’”

Pharaoh said “Who is the LORD, that I should obey his voice to let Israel go? I do not know the LORD, neither will I let Israel go.”

And they said “The God of the Hebrews has met with us: please let us go three days’ journey into the desert, and sacrifice to the LORD our God, or he may strike us with pestilence or the sword.”

The king of Egypt said to them “Why do you, Moses and Aaron, take the people away from their work? Get back to your labors.”

And Pharaoh said “Look, the people of the land now are many, and your make them rest from their burdens.”

Pharaoh commanded the same day the taskmasters of the people, and their officers, saying,

“No more shall you give the people straw to make brick, as you have been. Let them go and gather straw for themselves.

And the tally of the bricks, which they did make before, you shall require of them; you shall not reduce it, for they are idle, so they cry out ‘Let us go and sacrifice to our God.’

Let more work be laid upon the men, that they may labor, and pay no attention to lying words.”

So the taskmasters of the people went out, and their officers, and they spoke to the people saying “Pharaoh says: ‘I will not give you straw.

You go, and get straw where you can find it: but your work will not be reduced.”

So the people were scattered abroad throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble instead of straw.

The taskmasters pressed them, saying “Fulfil your work, your daily tasks, as when there was straw.”

And the officers of the children of Israel, which Pharaoh’s taskmasters had set over them, were beaten and asked “Why have you not fulfilled your task in making bricks both yesterday and today, as before?”

Then the officers of the children of Israel came and cried to Pharaoh, saying, Why are you dealing this way with your servants?

There is no straw given to your servants and they say to us ‘Make brick,’ and your servants are beaten; but the fault is in your own people.”

But he said “You are idle, you are idle: that’s why you say ‘Let us go and make sacrifice to the Lord.’

Now go and work; for no straw will be given to you, but you will deliver the same number of bricks.”

The officers of the children of Israel saw that they were in trouble, after they were told “You shall not reduce the number of bricks from your daily task.”

When they left from meeting Pharaoh, they met Moses and Aaron on the way.

And they said to them “The Lord look upon you and judge, because you have made stink in the sight of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of his servants, to put a sword in their hand to slay us.”

Moses returned to the Lord, and said “Lord, why have you treated this people so evil? Why is it that you have sent me?

For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has done evil to this people and has delivered your people at all.”
