Water turning to blood was the first plague we saw in Exodus 7. In this chapter we will see plagues two, three and four. We said the plagues would gradually get worse. Beginning with the plague of flies only the Egyptians are affected, no one in the land of Goshen.
Exodus 8
The Lord spoke to Moses “Go to Pharaoh and say to him ‘This is what the LORD says, “Let my people go, that they may serve me.
And if you refuse to let them go, I will plague all your territory with frogs.
The Nile will produce frogs abundantly, which shall go up and come into your house, and into your bedroom, and on your bed, and into the house of your servants, and your people, and into your ovens, and into yout kneading bowels.
The frogs will come up on you, and your people, and all of your servants.”’”
And the Lord spoke to Moses “Say to Aaron, ‘Stretch out your hand with your staff over the streams, over the rivers, and over the ponds, and cause frogs to come up onto the land of Egypt.’”
Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt; and the frogs came up, and covered the land of Egypt.
And the magicians did so with their enchantments, and brought up frogs onto the land of Egypt.
Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron, and said “Plead with the LORD, that he may take away the frogs from me, and from my people; and I will let the people go, that they may sacrifice to the LORD.”
And Moses said to Pharaoh “The honor is yours to tell me: when shall I plead for you, and for your servants, and for your people, to destroy the frogs from you and your houses, that they may remain only in the Nile?”
And he said “Tomorrow.” Moses said “Let it be according to your word, that you may know that there is on one like the LORD our God.
And the frogs will depart from you, and your houses, your servants, and your people; they shall remain only in the Nile.”
Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh: and Moses cried out to the LORD because of the frogs which he had brought against Pharaoh.
And the Lord did according to the word of Moses; and the frogs died out of the houses, out of the villages, and out of the fields.
They gathered them together into heaps, and the land stank.
But when Pharaoh saw that there was relief, he hardened his heart, and did not listen to them; as the LORD had said.
The LORD said to Moses “Say to Aaron ‘Stretch out your staff and strike the dust of the land, that it may become gnats throughout all the land of Egypt.’”
And they did so. Aaron stretched out his hand with his staff, and struck the dust of the earth and it became gnats in man, and in beast. All the dust of the land became gnats throughout all the land of Egypt.
The magicians tried with their enchantments to bring forth gnats, but they could not: so there were gnats upon man, and upon beast.
Then the magicians said to Pharaoh “This is the finger of God.” But Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he did not listen to them; as the Lord had said.
The Lord said to Moses “Rise up early in the morning and stand before Pharaoh. When he comes out to the water say unto him “This is what the LORD says “Let my people go, that they may serve me.
Or else, if you will not let my people go, I will send swarms of flies on you, and on your servants, and on your people, and into your houses: and the houses of the Egyptians shall be full of swarms of flies, and also the ground on which they stand.
On that day I will set apart the land of Goshen, in which my people dwell, that no swarms of flies will be there; so that you may know that I, the LORD, am in this land.
I will make a distinction between my people and your people: this sign will be tomorrow. ”
And the Lord did so. There came a thick swarm of flies into the house of Pharaoh, and into his servants’ houses, and into all the land of Egypt: the land was ruined by the flies.
Pharaoh called for Moses and for Aaron, and said “Go, sacrifice to your God in the land.”
Moses said “It would not be right to do so; for what we sacrifice to the LORD God would be an abomination to the Egyptians. If we sacrifice what is an abomination in front of the, will they not stone us?
We will go three days’ journey into the wilderness, and sacrifice to the LORD our God, as he commands us.”
Pharaoh said “I will let you go, that you may sacrifice to the LORD your God in the wilderness; only you shall not go very far away. Plead for me.”
And Moses said “Behold, I am going from you, and I will plead to the LORD that the swarms of flies may depart from Pharaoh, and his servants, and from his people, tomorrow: but do not deal deceitfully any more in not letting the people go to sacrifice to the LORD.”
Moses went out from Pharaoh and pleaded with the LORD.
And the LORD did according to the word of Moses, he removed the swarms of flies from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people; there remained not one.
And Pharaoh hardened his heart at this time also, neither would he let the people go.
