This chapter has laws about personal property and restitution and laws dealing with social justice. Exodus 21, 22 and 23 are all one great monologue as God is sharing his laws and statues with Moses. Hang in there, stuff begins happening again in chapter 24; then crazy wackadoodle stuff happens.
Exodus 22
“If a man shall steal an ox, or a sheep, and kill it, or sell it, he shall restore five oxen for an ox, and four sheep for a sheep.
If a thief is found breaking in, and is struck so that he dies, no blood shall be shed for him.
If the sun has risen on him, there shall be bloodguilt for him; for he should make full restitution; if he has nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft.
If the theft be certainly found in his hand alive, whether it be ox, donkey, or sheep; he shall restore double.
If a man causes a field or vineyard to be grazed in, or puts his beast in to graze in someone else’s field, he shall repay with the best of his own field or the best of his own vineyard.
If fire breaks out and catches in thorns, so that the stacks of corn, or the standing corn, or the field, be consumed, he that kindled the fire shall surely make restitution.
If a man delivers to his neighbor money or goods to keep, and it gets stolen out of the man’s house; if the thief is found, let him pay double.
If the thief is not found, then the master of the house shall be brought to the judges, to see whether he has put his hand to his neighbor’s goods.
For all manner of trespass, whether it be for ox, donkey, sheep, or raiment, or for any manner of lost thing which another challenges to be his, the cause of both parties shall come before the judges; and whom the judges condemn, he shall pay double to his neighbor.
If a man delivers to his neighbour a donkey, or an ox, a sheep, or any animal to care for, and it dies, or gets hurt or driven away, and no one sees it; :
Then shall an oath of the LORD be between them both, that he has not put his hand to his neighbour’s goods; and the owner of it must accept the oath, and he shall not pay restitution.
If it is stolen from him, he shall make restitution to the owner.
If it is torn in pieces, then let him bring it for witness, and he shall not make good that which was torn.
If a man borrows anything from his neighbour, and it gets hurt, or dies, the owner not being with it, he shall surely make it good.
But if the owner is with it, he shall not make it good: if it is a hired thing, it came for his hire.
If a man seduces a virgin that is not betrothed, and lies with her, he shall surely endow her to be his wife.
If her father utterly refuses to give her to him, he shall pay money according to the dowry of virgins.
You shalt not allow a witch to live.
Whoever lies with an animal shall surely be put to death.
He that sacrifices to any god, save unto the LORD only, he shall utterly be destroyed.
You shall not wrong a traveler, nor oppress him: for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.
You shall not mistreat any widow, or fatherless child.
If you mistreat them in any wise, and they cry to me, I will surely hear their cry;
And my wrath shall burn, and I will kill you with the sword; and your wives shall be widows, and your children fatherless.
If you lend money to any of my people who are with you and are poor, you shall not be like a moneylender; you must not charge him interest..
If you take your neighbour’s cloak as a pledge, you shall return it to him by sunset
For that is his only covering, it is his clothing: what will he sleep in? When he cries out to me, then I will hear; for I am gracious.
You shall not blaspheme God, nor curse the ruler of your people.
You shall not delay to offer the first of your harvest or your wine: the firstborn of your sons you shall give to me.
Do the same with your oxen and sheep: seven days it shall be with his mother; on the eighth day you shall give it to me.
You are to be my holy people: do not eat any flesh that is torn apart by animals in the field; throw it to the dogs.
