Chapter 28 described how to make the garments for Aaron and his sons to wear as they minister in the office of the priesthood. This chapter instructions Moses to put the garments on them and consecrate them. This is the ordination service but we are still receiving instructions and not doing any of the things yet.
Exodus 29
“This is what you shall do to consecrate them, to serve me in the priest’s office: Take one bull and two rams without blemish,
And unleavened bread, and unleavened cakes mixed with oil, and unleavened wafers anointed with oil: make them of fine wheat flour.
Put them into one basket, and bring them in the basket, with the bull and the two rams.
Bring Aaron and his sons to the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and wash them with water.
And take the garments, and put the coat on Aaron, and the robe of the ephod, and the ephod, and the breastplate, and clothe him with the skillfully woven waistband of the ephod:
Put the turban on his head, and place the holy crown on the turban.
Then take the anointing oil, and pour it on his head, and anoint him.
And bring his sons and put coats on them.
Tie the sashes on Aaron and his sons, and put the headbands on them. The priest’s office shall be theirs for a perpetual statute: and you shall consecrate Aaron and his sons.
Have a bull brought before the tabernacle of the congregation: and Aaron and his sons shall put their hands on the head of the bull.
You shall kill the bull before the LORD, by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
Take some of the bull’s blood, and put it on the horns of the altar with your finger, and pour the rest of the blood beside the bottom of the altar.
Take all the fat that covers the entrails, and the long lobe of the liver, and the two kidneys, and the fat that is on them, and burn them on the altar.
But the flesh of the bull, and his skin, and his dung, you shall burn with fire without the camp: it is a sin offering.
You shall also take one ram; and Aaron and his sons shall put their hands on the head of the ram.
You shall slay the ram, and take his blood and sprinkle it all around on the altar.
And cut the ram in pieces, and wash the entrails and legs, and put them with the pieces and the head.
Burn the whole ram on the altar: it is a burnt offering to the LORD: it is a sweet savour, an offering made by fire to the LORD.
And take the other ram; and Aaron and his sons shall put their hands on the head of the ram.
Then you shall kill the ram, and take some of his blood, and put it on the tip of the right ear of Aaron, and on the tip of the right ear of his sons, and on the thumb of their right hand, and on the great toe of their right foot, and sprinkle the blood on all sides of the altar.
Take some of the blood that is on the altar, and some of the anointing oil, and sprinkle it on Aaron, and on his garments, and on his sons, and his son’s garments: and he shall be holy, and his garments, and his sons, and his sons’ garments with him.
You shall also take the fat of the ram, and the tail fat, and the fat that covereth the entrails, and the long lobe of the liver, and the two kidneys, and the fat that is on them, and the right shoulder; for it is a ram of consecration:
And one loaf of bread, and one cake of oiled bread, and one wafer out of the basket of the unleavened bread that is before the LORD:
And put all in the hands of Aaron, and in the hands of his sons; and wave them for a wave offering before the LORD.
And you shall receive them from their hands, and burn them on the altar for a burnt offering, for a sweet savor before the LORD: it is an offering made by fire to the Lord.
Take the breast of the ram of Aaron’s consecration, and wave it for a wave offering before the LORD: and it shall be your part.
Sanctify the breast of the wave offering, and the shoulder that was lifted up, of the ram of the consecration, from what was Aaron’s and his sons.
It shall be Aaron’s and his sons’ by a statute forever from the children of Israel: for it is a contribution: and it shall be a contribution from the children of Israel of the sacrifice of their peace offerings, their contribution to the LORD.
The holy garments of Aaron shall be his sons’ after him, so they can be anointed and ordained in them.
The son that is priest in his place shall put them on seven days, when he comes into the tabernacle of the congregation to minister in the Holy Place.
And you shall take the ram of the consecration, and boil his flesh in the Holy Place.
And Aaron and his sons shall eat the flesh of the ram, and the bread that is in the basket by the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.
And they shall eat those things wherewith the atonement was made, to consecrate and to sanctify them: but a stranger shall not eat thereof, because they are holy.
If any of the flesh of the consecrations, or of the bread, remains until the next morning, then you shall burn the remainder with fire: it shall not be eaten, because it is holy.
This you shall do to Aaron, and to his sons, according to all things which I have commanded you: for seven days you shall consecrate them.
You shall offer a bull every day for a sin offering for atonement: and you shall cleanse the altar, when you have made atonement for it, and you shall anoint it to sanctify it.
For seven days you shall make atonement for the altar, and sanctify it; and it shall be an altar most holy: whatever touches the altar shall be holy.
Now this is what you shall offer on the altar; two lambs of the first year every day.
You shall offer one lamb in the morning and the other at evening:
With the one lamb a tenth deal of flour mixed with the fourth part of a hin of beaten oil; and the fourth part of a hin of wine for a drink offering.
Offer the other lamb at evening, and the grain offering and the drink offering, for a sweet savor, an offering made by fire to the LORD.
This shall be a continual burnt offering throughout your generations at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the LORD, where I will meet you, and speak to you there.
And there I will meet with the children of Israel, and the tabernacle shall be sanctified by my glory.
I will sanctify the tabernacle of the congregation, and the altar: I will also sanctify Aaron and his sons, to serve me in the priest’s office.
I will dwell among the children of Israel, and will be their God.
And they shall know that I am the LORD their God, that brought them out of the land of Egypt, that I may dwell among them: I am the LORD their God.
