Read the Bible: Matthew 10

Matthew lists the 12 disciples that Jesus called and also appointed as Apostles. They are given authority to heal the sick, cast out demons and even raise the dead. He then gives them lengthy instructions, some of which will apply right away and some they rely on after he ascends into heaven and the New Testament church age begins.

Matthew 10

When he had called his twelve disciples, he gave them power against unclean spirits, to cast them out, and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.

Now the names of the twelve apostles are these; The first, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother; James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother;

Philip, and Bartholomew; Thomas, and Matthew the tax collector; James the son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus;

Simon the Canaanite, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed him.

Jesus sent out these twelve after giving them instructions, saying “Do not go into the way of the Gentiles, and do not enter into any city of the Samaritans.

But rather go to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

And as you go, preach, saying ‘The kingdom of heaven is at hand.’

Heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, cast out demons: freely you have received, freely give.

Take neither gold, nor silver, nor copper in your belts,

No bag for your journey, nor an extra tunic, nor sandals, nor a walking stick: for the workman is worthy of his food.

Whatever city or town you enter, enquire who in it is worthy; and there until you leave.

When you enter a house, greet it.

And if the house is worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it is not worthy, take back your blessing of peace.

Whoever will not receive you, nor hear your words, when you depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.

Truly I say to you, It will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha on the day of judgment, than for that city.

Behold, I am sending you out as sheep among wolves: so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.

Beware of men: for they will deliver you up to the councils, and they will flog you in their synagogues;

And you shall be brought before governors and kings for my sake, for a testimony against them and the Gentiles.

But when they deliver you up, take no thought how you will speak or what you will say: for it will be given you in that same hour what you shall speak.

For it is not you that speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.

Brother shall deliver up the brother to death, and the father the child: and the children shall rise up against their parents, and cause them to be put to death.

And you will be hated by all men for my name’s sake: but he that endures to the end shall be saved.

But when they persecute you in this city, flee into another: for truly I say to you, You will not have covered all the cities of Israel before the Son of man comes.

The disciple is not above his master, nor the servant above his lord.

It is enough for the disciple that he becomes like his master, and the servant like his lord. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebub, how much more the members of his household?

Do not fear them, for there is nothing covered that will not be revealed; and hidden that will not be made known.

What I tell you in the dark, say in the light: what you hear in a whisper, preach on the housetops.

Do not fear them which kill the body but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father.

The very hairs of your head are all numbered.

So do not fear, you are more valuable than many sparrows.

Therefore everyone who confesses me before men, I will also confess before my Father who is in heaven.

But whoever denies me before men, I will also deny him before my Father who is in heaven.

Do not think that I have come to send peace on earth: I came not to send peace, but a sword.

For I have come to turn a man against his father, and the daughter against her mother, and the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law.

And a man’s enemies will be the members of his own household.

Anyone that loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me: and one that loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.

The one that does not take up his cross, and follow me, is not worthy of me.

Anyone who finds his life shall lose it: and the one that loses his life for my sake shall find it.

Anyone that receives you receives me, and the one that receives me receives him that sent me.

He that receives a prophet in the name of a prophet shall receive a prophet’s reward; and he that receives a righteous man in the name of a righteous man shall receive a righteous man’s reward.

And whoever gives a cup of cold water to one of these little ones in the name of a disciple, truly I say to you, he will never lose his reward.
