Disciples from John the Baptist come to ask Jesus if he is the one. Jesus tells them to report back all the things they see and hear. Jesus denounces their cities noting that if the things they are seeing had been done in Tyre, Sidon and even Sodom they would have long since repented.
Matthew 11
When Jesus had finished giving instructions to his twelve disciples, he departed from there to teach and preach in their cities.
When John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples,
And asked him “Are you the one that should come, or should we look for another?”
Jesus answered and said “Go and show John again those things that you hear and see:
The blind receive their sight, and the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, and the deaf hear, the dead are raised up, and the poor have the gospel preached to them.
And anyone not offended because of me is blessed.”
As they departed, Jesus began to say to the crowds concerning John “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken with the wind?
Then what did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothes? Behold, those that wear soft clothing are in kings’ houses.
But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, and I say to you more than a prophet.
For this is the one of whom it was written ‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who shall prepare your way before you.’
Truly I say to you, among those that are born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffered violence, and the violent take it by force.
For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.
And if you are willing to accept it he is Elijah, who is to come.
He that has ears to hear, let him hear.
To what shall I compare this generation? It is like children sitting in the markets, and calling to each other,
saying ‘We have played for you, and you have not danced; we sang a lament for and you have not mourned.’
For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say ‘He has a demon.’
The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say ‘Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ But wisdom is vindicated by her deeds.”
Then he began to denounce the cities in which most of his mighty works were done, because they did not repent.
“Woe to you, Chorazin! woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works, which were done in you, had been done in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth and ashes.
But I say to you, It will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.
And you, Capernaum, will you be exalted to heaven? You shall be brought down to hades. For if the mighty works, which have been done in you, had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day.
But I say to you it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom on the day of judgment, than for you.”
At that time Jesus answered and said “I thank you, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hid these things from the wise and prudent, and have revealed them unto infants.
Yes, Father, for it seemed good in your sight.
All things are delivered to me by my Father: and no man knows the Son but the Father; neither does any man know the Father, except the Son, and whoever the Son chooses to reveal him.
Come to me, all that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you and learn of me; for I am gentle and humble in heart: and you will find rest for your souls.
For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”
