Parable of laborers in the vineyard; Jesus predicts his death, burial and resurrection a third time; the mother of James and John makes a request; two blind men receive sight.
Matthew 20
“For the kingdom of heaven is like a man that is a landowner, who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard.
When he had agreed with the laborers for a penny a day, he sent them into his vineyard.
He went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace,
And said to them ‘You go into the vineyard also, and whatever is right I will give you.’ And they went their way.
Again he went out about the sixth and ninth hour, and did the same thing.
And about the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle, and said to them, ‘Why do you stand here all day idle?’
They said to him ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You go into the vineyard also; and whatever is right, you will receive.’
So when evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, ‘Call the laborers, and pay them their wages, starting from the last unto the first.’
When the laborers came that were hired about the eleventh hour, each man received a penny.
When the first men that were hired came, they expected that they would receive more; and they received a penny also.
When they had received it, they grumbled against the landowner,
Saying, ‘These last workers have worked for one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the work and heat of the day.’
The landowner answered one of them, and said, ‘Friend, I am doing no wrong to you: did you not agree to work for me for a penny?
Take what’s yours and go. I want to give this last man the same as I gave you.
Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money? Or are you envious because I am generous?’
So the last shall be first, and the first last: for many will be called, but few chosen.”
Jesus went up to Jerusalem and took the twelve disciples aside, and said to them,
“Listen, we are going to Jerusalem; and the Son of Man will be delivered to the chief priests and scribes, and they will condemn him to death,
They will deliver him to the Gentiles to be mocked, scourged, and crucified: and on the third day he will rise again.”
Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came to Jesus with her sons, bowing down and making a request of him.
Jesus said to her, “What do you want?” She said to him, “Grant that my two sons may sit with you in your kingdom, one on your right hand, and the other on the left.”
Jesus answered and said “You do not understand what you are asking for. Are you able to drink from the cup that I will drink from, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with?” They said to him, “We are able.”
He said to them, “You will indeed drink of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it will be given to those for whom it has been prepared by my Father.”
When the other ten heard about it, they were indignant toward the two brothers.
Jesus called them to himself, and said “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and those that have high positions exercise authority over them.
It must not be like that among you. On the contrary, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,
And whoever wants to be first among you must be your slave;
Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.”
As they were leaving from Jericho, a great crowd followed him.
There were two blind men sitting by the road, and when they heard that Jesus passed by they cried out, saying “Have mercy on us, O Lord, Son of David.”
The crowd told the blind men to be quiet, but they cried out even more, saying “Have mercy on us, O Lord, Son of David!”
Jesus stood still, and called out to them, and said “What do you want me to do for you?“
They said to him, “Lord, open our eyes.”
So Jesus had compassion on them, and touched their eyes: and immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed him.
