The Triumphal Entry is the first event in what we call Holy Week or the week of Jesus’ Passion. We start with Palm Sunday, then see the cleansing of the temple, the curse of the fig tree, questions about his authority, his question about John the Baptist, and the parable of the wicked tenants. It’s a long chapter but filled with good stuff. More good stuff tomorrow.
Matthew 21
When they drew near Jerusalem, and came to Bethphage, to the mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples,
Saying to them “Go into the village ahead of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Loose them, and bring them to me.
And if any man says anything to you, you shall say ‘The Lord has need of them;’ and he will send them right away.”
All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying,
“Tell the daughter of Zion, ‘Behold, your King comes to you, meek and sitting upon a donkey and a colt, the foal of a donkey.’”
And the disciples went and did as Jesus commanded them,
They brought the donkey, and the colt, and put their cloaks on them, and he sat on them.
A very large crowd spread their garments in the way while others cut down branches from the trees, and spread them on the road.
And the crowds that went before, and that followed, cried out “Hosanna to the son of David: Blessed is he that comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.”
When he came into Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying “Who is this?”
And the crowd said “This is Jesus, the prophet of Nazareth of Galilee.”
Jesus went into the temple of God, and drove out all those that bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves,
And said to them “It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but you have made it a den of thieves.”
The blind and the lame came to him in the temple; and he healed them.
When the chief priests and scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying in the temple, and saying, “Hosanna to the son of David” they were much displeased,
And said to him “Do you hear what they are saying?” Jesus replied “Yes; have you never read ‘Out of the mouth of babes and nursing infants you have perfected praise?'”
He left them, and went out of the city into Bethany; and he spent the night there.
In the morning as he returned to the city, he was hungry.
When he saw a fig tree by the way, he came to it, and found nothing on it but leaves, and said to it “May no fruit ever grow on you again.” And the fig tree withered away at once.
When the disciples saw it, they marvelled, saying, “How soon is the fig tree withered away!”
Jesus answered and said to them “Truly I say to you, If you have faith and not doubt, you shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but if you say to this mountain ‘Be removed and cast into the sea,’ it shall be done.
And all things, whatever you ask in prayer, believing, you will receive.”
When he came into the temple, the chief priests and the elders of the people came to him as he was teaching, and said “By what authority do you do these things? Who gave you this authority?”
Jesus answered them “I will also ask you one thing, and if you tell me I will likewise tell you by what authority I do these things.
The baptism of John, was it from heaven or of men?” And they reasoned among themselves “If we shall say, ‘From heaven’ he will say to us ‘Then why did you not believe him?’
But if we say ‘Of men’ we fear the people, for all hold John as a prophet.”
So they answered Jesus “We do not know.” And he said to them “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.
But what do you think? A certain man had two sons; and he came to the first and said ‘Son, go work today in my vineyard.’
He answered and said, ‘I will not:’ but afterward he repented, and went.
And he came to the second and said the same. And he answered and said ‘I go, sir’ but did not.
Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said to him “The first.” Jesus said “Truly I say to you, that the tax collectors and prostitutes go into the kingdom of God before you.
For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him. But tax collectors and prostitutes believed him: and you, when you had seen it, did not repent afterward that you might believe him.
Hear another parable: There was a certain land owner that planted a vineyard, and put a fence around it, and dug a winepress in it, and built a tower, and leased it to tenants, and went into a far country.
When the time of the harvest drew near, he sent his servants to the tenants to collect his fruit.
But the tenants took his servants, and beat one, and killed another, and stoned another.
Again, he sent other servants more than the first: and they did the same to them.
Finally he sent his son, saying, ‘They will revere my son.’
But when they saw the son, they said among themselves ‘This is the heir; come, let us kill him and take the inheritance.’
They caught him, and cast him out of the vineyard, and killed him.
When the lord of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?”
They say to him “He will destroy those wicked men, and will lease his vineyard to other tenants who will render him the fruits in their seasons.”
Jesus saith to them “Have you never read in the scriptures, ‘The stone which the builders rejected, has become the cornerstone: this is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes?’
Therefore say I to you, The kingdom of God shall be taken from you, and given to people bringing forth its fruits.
Whoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whoever it falls, it will grind him to powder.”
And when the chief priests and Pharisees heard his parables, they perceived that he was speaking about them.
But although they desired to lay hands on him, they feared the crowds, because the people regarded him a prophet.
