Read the Bible: Matthew 27

Peter returns the 30 pieces of silver; Pilate is amazed that Jesus will not respond to his accusers; the people demand Barabbas be released and Jesus crucified; Jesus is crucified between two thieves and buried in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathaea. Once again we are reading the text today and saving the discussion for tomorrow.

Matthew 27

When morning came, all the chief priests and elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death:

They bound him and led him away, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor.

Then Judas, who had betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned was filled with remorse, and returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,

Saying “I have sinned in that I have betrayed innocent blood.” And they said “What is that to us? See to it yourself.” .

And he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed; then went and hanged himself.

The chief priests took the silver pieces and said “It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, because it is the price of blood.”

So they took counsel, and bought the potter’s field with it, to bury strangers in.

That’s why that field was called The field of blood to this day.

Then the words spoken by Jeremiah the prophet were fulfilled: “And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was valued by the sons of Israel,

And gave them for the potter’s field, as the Lord directed me.”

Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him “Are you the King of the Jews?” And Jesus said to him “So you say.”

When he was accused of the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.

Then Pilate said to him “Do you not hear how many things they testify against you?”

And he never answered him a word, so that the governor was greatly amazed.

Now at the feast it was the governor’s custom to release to the people a prisoner of their choosing.

They had then a notable prisoner called Barabbas.

So when they were gathered together, Pilate said to them “Who will you have me release to you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?”

For he knew that he had been delivered out of envy.

When he sat down on the judgment seat, his wife sent word to him, saying “Have nothing to do with that just man: for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him.”

But the chief priests and elders persuaded the crowd that they should ask for Barabbas, and destroy Jesus.

The governor answered and said to them “Which of these two will you have me release?” They answered “Barabbas.”

Pilate said to them “What shall I do then with Jesus who is called Christ?” They all said “Let him be crucified.”

The governor said “Why, what has he done wrong?” But they shouted “Let him be crucified.”

When Pilate saw that he could not prevail, but rather a riot was starting, he took water and washed his hands before the crowd, saying “I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see to it yourselves.”

Then all the people answered and said “His blood be on us, and on our children.”

Then he released Barabbas for them: and when he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the common hall, and gathered the whole band of soldiers.

And they stripped him, and put a scarlet robe on him. .

They twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and a reed in his right hand: and they bowed the knee before him, and mocked him, saying “Hail, King of the Jews!”

They spit on him, and struck him on the head with the reed.

And after that they had mocked him, they took the robe off of him and put his own clothes back on, and led him away to crucify him.

As they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name, and they compelled him to bear his cross.

When they were come to a place called Golgotha, that is to say, a place of a skull,

They gave him vinegar to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted of it he would not drink.

They crucified him and divided his garments casting lots: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet “They parted my garments among them, and on my clothing they did cast lots.”

Then they sat down to keep watch over him,

They put a sign above his head with his accusation written: “This Is Jesus The King Of The Jews.”

Then two thieves were crucified with him, one on the right hand, and another on the left.

Those that passed by reviled him, shaking their heads

and saying “You that would destroy the temple and build it in three days, save yourself. If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.”

The chief priests also mocked him, with the scribes and elders who said

“He saved others; he cannot save himself. If he is the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe him.

He trusted in God; let him deliver him now, if he will have him: for he said ‘I am the Son of God.’”

The thieves who were crucified with him also reviled him in the same way.

Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness across the land.

About the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is to say “My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?”

Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said “This man calls for Elijah.”

Right away one of them ran and took a sponge, filled it with vinegar, put it on a reed, and gave it to him to drink.

The rest said “Let him be, let’s see whether Elijah will come and save him.”

Jesus cried again with a loud voice and gave up his spirit.

The veil of the temple was torn in two from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks split;

The graves were opened; and the bodies of many saints which slept arose,

And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared to many.

Now when the centurion and those with him that had been watching Jesus saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they were very afraid, saying “Truly this was the Son of God.”

Many women who followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him, were there watching from far off.

Among them were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee’s children.

At evening, a rich man of Arimathaea named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus’ disciple,

went to Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered.

When Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,

And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone against the entrance of the tomb, and departed.

Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were there, sitting facing the tomb.

The next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together before Pilate,

Saying “Sir, we remember that while the deceiver was still alive he said ‘After three days I will rise again.’

Command that the tomb be made secure until the third day. Otherwise his disciples may come by night and steal him away, and say to the people ‘He is risen from the dead.’ Then the last error will be worse than the first.”

Pilate told them “You have a guard of soldiers. Go your way, make it as secure as you can.”

So they went, and secured the tomb, sealing the stone, and setting a guard.
