The resurrection; Jesus appears first to Mary Magdalene and the other Mary and later to the 11 Apostles; the Great Commission.
This chapter finishes Matthew’s Gospel and we will jump back into the Old Testament and begin reading Leviticus tomorrow.
Matthew 28
After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb.
And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat on it.
His appearance was like lightning and his clothing white as snow:
The guards shook with fear and became like dead men.
But the angel answered and said to the women “Fear not; for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified.
He is not here: for he has risen, as he said. Come see the place where the Lord lay.
And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead; behold, he goes before you into Galilee; there you will see him: Now I have told you.
They departed quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy; and ran to bring his disciples word.
As they went to tell his disciples, Jesus met them, saying “Greetings.” And they came and held him by the feet, and worshiped him.
Then Jesus said to them “Do not be afraid. Go tell my brothers to go into Galilee, and they will see me there.”
Now as they were going, some of the guard went into the city and told the chief priests all the things that happened.
When they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave a large sum of money to the soldiers,
Instructing them to say “‘His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept.’
And if this comes to the governor’s ears, we will persuade him, and secure you.”
So they took the money, and did as they were told: and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day.
Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had directed them.
When they saw him, they worshiped him: but some doubted.
And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying “All power is given to me in heaven and on earth.
Go therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you: and behold, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”
