This chapter is about the days of purification after a woman gives birth. Because of Luke 2, it gives us an opportunity to talk about the baby Jesus and how Joseph and Mary were observant Jews.
Leviticus 12
The LORD spoke to Moses, saying:
2 “Speak to the children of Israel, saying ‘If a woman has conceived and gives birth to a male child: then she shall be unclean seven days; as the days of her menstruation, she shall be unclean.
3 On the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised.
4 And she shall then continue in her purification 33 days; she shall not touch anything holy, nor come into the sanctuary, until the days of her purification are fulfilled.
5 If she bears a female child, then she shall be unclean two weeks, as in her separation: and she shall continue in her purification 66 days.
6 When the days of her purification are fulfilled, for a son or a daughter, she shall bring a lamb of the first year for a burnt offering, and a young pigeon, or a turtledove, for a sin offering, to the door of the tent of meeting, to the priest:
7 Who shall offer it before the LORD, and make atonement for her; and she shall be cleansed from the issue of her blood. This is the law for her that has given birth, to either a male or female child.
8 And if she is not able to bring a lamb, then she shall bring two turtles, or two young pigeons; the one for the burnt offering, and the other for a sin offering: and the priest shall make atonement for her, and she shall be clean.’”
