Read the Bible: Leviticus 26

This chapter lists the blessings for obedience and the punishments for disobedience. It really is just that simple. And you might think that after all the children of Israel had seen God do, in Egypt and at Mount Sinai, that disobedience would be practically unheard of.

Leviticus 26

“You shall not make idols or graven images, neither stand up pillars, nor set up any image of stone in your land, to bow down to it: for I am the LORD your God.

You shall keep my Sabbaths, and revere my sanctuary: I am the LORD.

If you walk in my statutes, and keep my commandments, and do them;

Then I will give you rain in due season, and the land shall yield its increase, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruit.

Your threshing shall continue until grape harvest, and grape harvest shall last until sowing time: and you shall eat your bread to the full, and dwell in your land safely.

And I will give peace in the land, and you shall lie down, and none shall make you afraid: and I will remove dangerous animals from the land, neither shall the sword go through your land.

You shall chase your enemies, and they will fall before you by the sword.

Five of you shall chase a hundred, and a hundred of you shall put ten thousand to flight: and your enemies shall fall before you by the sword.

For I will have respect for you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, and establish my covenant with you.

You shall eat from the old store, and bring forth the old because of the new.

I will set my tabernacle among you: and my soul shall not abhor you.

And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and you shall be my people.

I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, that you should not be their slaves; and I have broken the bands of your yoke, and made you walk upright.

But if you will not listen to me, and will not do all these commandments;

if you shall despise my statutes, or if your soul abhors my judgments, so that you will not do all my commandments, but you break my covenant:

I also will do this to you; I will appoint over you terror, consumption, and the burning fever that shall make your eyes fail and cause sorrow of heart: and you shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies will eat it.

I will set my face against you, and you shall be slain before your enemies: those that hate you shall reign over you; and you shall run when none pursues you.

And if you will not yet for all this listen to me, then I will punish you seven more times for your sins.

I will break the pride of your power; and I will make your heaven as iron, and your earth as brass:

And your strength shall be spent in vain: for your land shall not yield its increase, neither shall the trees of the land yield their fruits.

If you walk contrary to me, and will not listen; I will bring seven times more plagues upon you according to your sins.

I will also send wild animals among you, which shall rob you of your children, and destroy your cattle, and make you few in number; and your highways shall be desolate.

And if you will not be reformed by these things, but walk contrary to me;

Then will I also walk contrary to you, and will punish you seven times for your sins.

And I will bring a sword upon you, that shall avenge the quarrel of my covenant: and when you are gathered together within your cities, I will send the pestilence among you; and you shall be delivered into the hand of the enemy.

When I have broken the staff of your bread, ten women shall bake your bread in one oven, and they shall deliver you your bread again by weight: and you shall eat, and not be satisfied.

And if you will still not listen to me, but walk contrary;

Then I will walk contrary to you also in anger; and I will chastise you seven times for your sins.

You shall eat the flesh of your sons, and the flesh of your daughters.

I will destroy your high places, and cut down your images, and cast your carcasses on the carcasses of your idols, and my soul shall abhor you.

I will make your cities waste, and bring your sanctuaries to desolation, and I will not smell the aroma of your offerings.

I will bring the land into desolation: and your enemies which dwell there shall be astonished by it.

I will scatter you among the nations, and will draw out a sword after you: and your land shall be desolate, and your cities waste.

Then the land shall enjoy its Sabbaths, as long as it lies desolate, and you are in your enemies’ land; even then the land shall rest, and enjoy its Sabbaths.

As long as it lies desolate it shall rest; because it did not rest in your Sabbaths, when you dwelt in it.

Then on them that are left alive of you I will send a faintness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies; and the sound of a shaken leaf shall chase them; and they shall flee, as fleeing from a sword; and they shall fall when none pursue.

And they shall fall on one another, as it were before a sword, when none pursues: and you shall have no power to stand before your enemies.

You shall perish among the nations, and the land of your enemies shall eat you up.

Those that are left of you shall waste away in their sins in your enemies’ lands; and also in the sins of their fathers they will waste away with them.

If they confess their sin, and the sin of their fathers, with their unfaithfulness they committed  against me in that they walked contrary to me;

And that I also have walked contrary to them, and have brought them into the land of their enemies; if then their uncircumcised hearts be humbled, and they then accept of the punishment of their wrongdoing:

Then I will remember my covenant with Jacob, and my covenant with Isaac, and my covenant with Abraham; and I will remember the land.

The land shall be left of them, and shall enjoy her Sabbaths while she lies desolate without them: and they shall accept the punishment of their iniquity: because they despised my judgments, and because their soul abhorred my statutes.

And yet for all that, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not cast them away, neither will I abhor them, to destroy them utterly, and to break my covenant with them: for I am the LORD their God.

But I will for their sakes remember the covenant of their ancestors, whom I brought forth out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the nations, that I might be their God: I am the LORD.”

These are the statutes and judgments and laws, which the LORD made between him and the children of Israel on mount Sinai by the hand of Moses.
