Angela Lansbury has passed at the age of 96. Best known for playing Jessica Fletcher on Murder She Wrote, her film and Broadway career began decades earlier. Robbie Coltrane (Hagrid of Harry Potter fame) has passed at the age of 72. I’m not trying to sound superstitious but it seems like these things usually come in threes. That’s probably a good example of confirmation bias. If another celebrity passes away in the next couple of days I’ll be like “See, comes in threes.” Confirmation bias interprets new events in a way the confirms what you already believe. It may also be perception bias, which is hopefully just what it sounds like.

The guy on the bike was Steve Jobs. When he was photographed by National Geographic in 1982 he didn’t want to pose standing with his arms cross in front of rows of computer terminals. Props for that, my opinion of him may have just gone up slightly. I tell you what though, the thing about those BMW motorcycles is they have horizontally opposed cylinders. Most American and Japanese motorcycles have two cylinder engines in what’s called a V-twin formation. The engines are pretty well oriented inside the frame. What you see next to Jobs left foot is a cylinder head sticking out farther than anything on the bike, which is just find unless you were to drop the bike and go for a slide. Since he wants to look cool for this picture he is not wearing a jacket, helmet or gloves so the damage done to that cylinder head is probably the least of his worries. The picture was probably taken at a very low shutter speed so he is probably not going as fast as the blurry background wire wheel spokes suggest. Hey kids, remember film? No, probably not. Replace shutter speed with frame rate for comparison.

Happy Monday No. 500

The Happy Monday truck doesn’t look like it’s aged a day. You wouldn’t age either if your image was digitally manipulated and then just reposted on occasion for the next several years. Fail Blog used to “send in the Fail boat” so I thought maybe Happy Monday could be delivered by box truck.

Hurricane Ian – There is probably no way you missed this story but it’s not over yet. The death toll in Florida stands at 33 but that number is subject to change and Ian made landfall again on Friday afternoon at Charleston, South Carolina, after regaining hurricane status. Pray for all those who have been and continue to be affected. Word of caution: only donate money through established organizations with a good reputation/history. The American Red Cross and the Salvation Army are good examples and Southern Baptists will be mobilizing their own disaster relief teams in the days and weeks ahead. Think twice about responding to online ads or texting money from your phone; know who you are dealing with. And be patient. Search and rescue is always a priority followed by restoring power and clearing roads. Cleaning up and rebuilding will go on for months to come. Rushing in too quickly will get in the way and slow down some emergency services. The news will move on in a few days to the next breaking story but Puerto Rico, Cuba, Florida and the Carolinas will still need prayer, financial and volunteer support.

Old School WordlePaul Wilkinson reminds us that before Wordle became the hottest thing since the Internet wordles were also known as word clouds or tag clouds. The more frequently a word occurs the more prominently it appears in the wordle. The one above is based on the whole Bible.

It’s fall y’all. The little bird is telling everyone how cold it is in the morning. You can follow him on Twitter. Meteorologists, who study weather and not meteors for some reason, consider September, October and November to be the fall months. The autumnal equinox is not until September 22nd which most people (and calendars) consider the first day of fall in the northern hemisphere and the first day spring in the southern. My family has already been apple picking and I can tell the weather is changing. It’s almost enough to cause me to wear long sleeves and not go outside barefoot. It’s time for the social media posts to start in about hoodies, furry boots, hot cocoa and bonfires. All your favorite fall activities are centered around trying to keep warm. I understand the appeal of some of those things but fall is a transition season into winter. I don’t get those people. Whether you love winter or not it hates all of us equally, that’s why it is trying to kill us. Refer back to the angry bird in the picture. He gets it.

Apples in season – As soon as the Satur-deja Vu was published last week my family packed up and headed to Blue Ridge, GA. The weather forecast called for only a 60% chance of thunderstorms that day as opposed to 80% on Sunday and Monday. Labor Day weekend was the first “U-Pick” event at Mercier Orchards and we definitely made the right call. Apple/ apple cinnamon is the official flavor of fall in our home, not pumpkin spice, and we came home with a peck. That’s approximately 2.2 gallons.

Then on Tuesday Teresa and I celebrated our 25th anniversary. September 6th, 1997, was the same day as Princess Diana’s funeral. Mother Teresa passed away the same day as well. We were married 12 years before our daughter Johannah was born. Other couples our age have children that are grown and some have grandchildren. My younger brother became Grandpa Bunch earlier this year at the age of 40. I’m happy where we are.

College football kicks off today. I’m sorry. I don’t know where these predictions come from but, yeah, this all seems legit. The big news is that the college football playoffs are expanding to 12 teams. Sometimes four doesn’t seem like enough but the current CFP (College Football Playoff) series has been in place since 2014. The 12 teams will consist of the six highest-ranked conference champions and six at-large teams, similar to other NCAA tournaments. 2026 is when the expanded format might begin, after the CFP contract expires. But the powers that be would like to it start as early as 2024.

I know what you’re thinking. That’s a Happy Monday post. Most any given week you would be right. This week’s Happy Monday was hard to put together. There just wasn’t enough stuff in the folder. Oddly enough there were Bible verses and quotes but a lack of funny bits. So this week we have gone overboard and have enough material for three Monday posts. I also drink coffee on Saturday; I’m headed to a men’s prayer breakfast shortly. Sometimes the Saturday posts are a little thin on churchy sort of things. What could be more churchy than a nuclear family walking out of a church in the 1950’s? The dad is wearing a suit and a hat, I mean come on. Coffee, church family, just a hint of sacrilege, but they’re not wrong.

iMonk Radio Podcast #103

Sabbatical is over; conventional wisdom; continuing discussion of Cornerstone seminar on the Evangelical Wilderness.

We have come to the end of the line. Two years ago I started posting all the Internet Monk Radio podcasts I had archived. Some fellow iMonk fans volunteered to share what they had and that’s why the posts began at #104 and came all the way around. Click this link to easily find all the podcasts from the past two years and of course this page contains the episodes I had on hand at the time of Michael’s passing, #’s 48 – 81.
