Congratulations #200
Just wanted to say thank you to bribruceproductions for becoming our 200th follower earlier this evening. Bri Bruce is into writing, editing, photography and graphic design; she had a new book of poetry published earlier this year.
My book will go the printer possibly one day next week. Thank you to all my readers and followers, including the 135 FB page fans and the 38 fans of God is Near on Facebook. And to all you lurkers out there who never comment or subscribe – I’ve seen the metrics, know you’re out there, appreciate you as well.
Mother’s Day
Here’s a couple of posts that have been getting increased traffic this week what with Mother’s Day coming up this weekend and all. Hopefully no preacher is looking for material at this late date but hey, I’m not here to judge.
This Mother’s Day Sermon was written in response to some gripes, actually. What many are looking for on Sunday morning, even mothers in the crowd, is the Gospel. Many in the crowd, including a few mothers, don’t want to hear another man read Proverbs 31 and tell them what biblical womanhood looks like.
A year later Instead of a Mother’s Day Sermon I preached about relationships. God is relational and a relationship with his people is what he most desires. Each relationship we develop, including with our mother/ with our children, helps us understand some aspect of what our relationship with God is like.
“Self Published” is No Longer a Dirty Word
Self publishing used to be problematic for many reasons. The quality of self-published works would immediately be suspect. If the manuscript was any good, why did all traditional publishing houses pass on it? Sometimes the quality of the physical book itself left something to be desired, from the materials used to the manufacturing process, not to mention the lack of quality graphics on the cover and potentially poor self-editing.
What if the manuscript was fantastic but no traditional publisher wanted to take a change on it? If a writer believed in his work he might pay out of pocket to have a few thousand copies printed, but then what? Continue reading
Trying Something New
Thomas Edison tried everything from wood to cotton fibers while attempting to create the first incandescent bulb. He failed many times before invented the light bulb containing a tungsten filament. He is often quoted as saying “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” The only way to discover new things that do work is to try new things not knowing if they will work or not.

The Problem with Comfort Zones
I’ve heard sermons, lessons and seminars that advise Christians to do something for God and “get out of your comfort zone.” It gets really awkward when Ray Comfort does it. Carrying your Bible in public, praying over lunch in the school cafeteria and volunteering for short term foreign mission fields are all examples of what can only be done once we leave our comfort zone. While all of those and many other examples are great things that Christians should be doing, I’ve never like the expression. Christian Rock, What Say Ye?
In the 70’s we were told that Rock music was Satan’s tongue. Then in the 80’s came the advent of “Christian rock,” loud music featuring electric guitar solos and driving drum beats with lyrics promoting the Gospel.

Bible Gateway Blogger Grid, Take 2
Last week I announced The Master’s Table was joining the Bible Gateway Blogger Grid. Then on Twitter I called it the Bible Gateway Blogging Grid. Bible Gateway re-tweeted my post but I still felt like a chump.

I did mention the Bible Gateway site, offering dozens of English translations and a host of others. I failed to mention the Bible Gateway Mobile App. Check out the classic Bible Gateway site then take a look at the Beta version which is coming soon. Read up on the Bible Gateway Blog or test your knowledge with the Bible Quote Quiz. It’s fun and you might learn something. On social media outlets (Facebook, Twitter, G+) posts tagged #bgbg2 are from Bible Gateway Blogger Grid members. You may have also noticed the Verse of the Day in the left-hand sidebar with a link to Bible Gateway; you can also subscribe to Verse of the Day via email.
We devoted a week of posts to Holy Week in April, then another week preparing for the National Day of Prayer. Next week will be sort of a return to business as usual; expect 2 or 3 posts a week that are God honoring and Christ centered, with all scripture references linked to Bible Gateway. My translation of choice is the English Standard Version (ESV) but your favorite versions plus some you may have never heard of are waiting for you at Bible Gateway.
