Happy Monday
The weekend is over. You’ve been in church all weekend and/or watched too much football. The fridge is full of left-overs. Monday morning means back to the grindstone for many, so here is some encouragement to help push you along. God looked at what he had made and declared that it was good; that includes Monday!
I am a big fan of the Our Daily Bread devotional from RBC Ministries. I have them e-mailed just in case I get too busy one morning or else forget to look at it. Check out this little gem, which seems to oddly correspond to the beginning of football season:
I sat down and wept, and mourned for many days; I was fasting and praying before the God of heaven. —Nehemiah 1:4
I loved Malcom’s prayer at church the other day. Only 7 years old, he stood in front of 100 other kids and prayed: “Jesus, thank You that some of us get to play football and go to church, and for safety on the ride here, and for forgiveness of our sins, and for eternal life. We love You, Jesus. Please don’t ever forget how much we love You!” Continue reading at Our Daily Bread. Continue reading

Happy Labor Day
In lieu of Happy Monday, Happy Labor Day!
Labor Day, in the Untied States anyway, is the unofficial end of summer. Memorial Day is the first 3-day-weekend of summer (a.k.a. opening day of grill season) and Labor Day is the last. So if you’re grilling out, lounging by the lake or taking one last cruise, you really don’t need any extra encouragement. If you do happen to be at work today, you must have one of those jobs that affords you the opportunity to read blogs on the Internet. So, you know, it could be worse.
Labor Day “celebrates the economic and social contributions of workers” and has been a federal holiday since 1894. (source) If you’re at work right now, then you have been blessed with health, knowledge, skills etc. that allow you to do that job. We are warned in scripture not to think we have made anything of ourselves. If you have a job and are off today, then you have been doubly blessed. I’m actually unemployed (yeah I said it) but will be grilling hamburgers and enjoying the long weekend my brother and his family have.
Not that I am speaking of being in need, for I have learned in whatever situation I am to be content. I know how to be brought low, and I know how to abound. In any and every circumstance, I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and need. I can do all things through him who strengthens me. -Philippians 4:11-13
Happy Monday Holiday
Happy Monday
It’s Happy Monday time!
In case you missed it…
While homeowners in Florida are covering windows with plywood, thousands of people were still living in tents in Haiti when Tropical Storm Isaac came through. The most recent numbers are six dead, but 30,000 have nowhere to go. Pray for all those affected in the gulf coast states, as Isaac continues to track further and further west than expected.
The American most famous for taking “one small step for man” has crossed over into eternity. Neil Armstrong was 82. His death may have been the result of complications following a recent heart surgery. Continue reading

Russell Crowe will play Noah. This “first look” pic was Tweeted by director Mark Morning. This film is set to be released spring 2014. (Russell looks good, but he’s no Steve Carell.)
It is no longer illegal for women in North Korea to ride bicycles. The law was about 20 years old, and truth be told was probably not enforced outside of Pyongyang. But still… progress?
Many states in the South are enjoying the “cold front” that came through this weekend. By cold I mean daytime highs are in the upper 80’s. School has started, the weather is almost fall-like, and my wife wants high-school football to start. Continue reading

The 2012 Summer Olympics are over in London, closing ceremonies were last night. The United States finished with 104 medals, 46 of them gold. Opening ceremonies for the 2014 winter games will be held February 7, 2014 in Sochi, Russia.
One of my pet peeves is everything that gets forwarded, reposted, retweeted etc. that was never true in the first place. It started with email in the late 90’s and has only gotten worse with social media and 24/7 connectivity. Neither Pepsi nor Coca-Cola are releasing a patriotic can which leaves “under God” out of the Pledge of Allegiance. Continue reading

“My purpose is to glorify God, and that’s what I want to do at the Olympic Games.” -Jennifer Nichols, archer, Team USA Read the full story here at Baptist Press.
Michael Phelps ends his Olympic career with a record breaking 22 total medals. This will be the week for track and field events, and basketball teams will begin knock-out rounds today as well. Team USA had their first “close call” with Lithuania, winning by only 6 points.
Chick-fil-A set new sales records last Wednesday, courtesy of Mike Huckabee sponsored Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day. Not all Christians stand in agreement, which should come as no big surprise. Other things Christians disagree on include infant baptism, the Lord’s Supper, the divinity of Christ and who can be saved. Continue reading

Opening Ceremonies in London – where else can you see Queen Elizabeth II jump from a helicopter or Mr. Bean play Chariots of Fire?
9.66 million Tweets sent during the Opening Ceremonies. That’s more than during the entire Games in Beiging, but to be fair Twitter wasn’t the “big deal” in 2008 is has become. Media outlets actually had problems Saturday because the data networks were jammed with tweets and they couldn’t get details for broadcast. When people watching television started tweeting about the lack of info, the problem only got worse.
James Holmes will be back in court today, but news cameras will not, Continue reading

Happy Monday, a weekend review and a look ahead.
Let’s begin with the good news (so I can display the London Olympics icon). Opening ceremonies for the 2012 Olympic Games are this Friday. For over 100 years the Olympics have been an occasion for the nations of the world to put their differences aside and meet on the athletic field. London2012.com is the official website. I will probably provide commentary and keep a running tab of American medals on my other blog.
Box Office numbers are not being released for Dark Knight Rises out of respect for Aurora, CO shooting victims. We have been praying for Colorado during the weeks of wildfires and home destruction, and will continue to pray for Colorado now. James Holmes will make his first appearance in court today. UPDATE – Formal charges will be filed on Monday, July 3o.
If you read this blog and are gay (probably a small demographic) you’ll want to find and join a Chick-fil-A boycott this week. Despite the chain’s official statement to continue serving everyone equally without discrimination, and leave the same-sex marriage debate to the politicians, Chick-fil-A is the target of GBLT boycotts and protests. For the rest of us, Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day is August 1. Like I said, as for me and my house…
Word of encouragement “…God is in the business of setting us up with just what is necessary for us to get to that place where we need to be. Keep serving others. Keep putting others first. Keep using your gifts to bless others. You never know when God will open a door for you.” More here from Walter Bright
Here’s a story I had pegged for the Read and Share File, but haven’t put together enough to publish another installment yet. John Boyers, pictured left, will coordinate 160 chaplains serving at the summer games in London. His regular “gig” is pastoring the players and staff of Manchester United, so he is right in his element. Read the full story at Baptist Press.
I’m looking forward to the week ahead. Keep my family in your prayers and have a Happy Monday :- D
