Half the fun of watching the Super Bowl is the commercials. This T Mobile spot is hilarious. A lot of hype has been made over Tom Brady leaving behind a long and successful career in New England only to immediately return to the Big Game with Tampa Bay. I noted on Facebook that Brady threw three touchdown passes, two of them to Rob Gronkowski, so it’s true that the Super Bowl is never about one guy. This one was about two guys. Fun fact: the original ad T Mobile produced mentioned Tampa Bay specifically. The ad in its original form was rejected and the words “Tampa Bay” were replaced by the more generic sounding “Florida.”

Pizza Hut rolls out Detroit style pizza nationwide. Your next question is probably “What is Detroit style pizza?” Well the first thing you might notice in the image is that this pizza is rectangle. It’s a picky little detail but Chicago style deep dish is usually round. The major difference is that while Chicago style pizza forms a deep dish and fills it with toppings, Detroit pizza has a much thicker crust. My wife’s complaint about Little Caesar’s Deep Deep Dish is that it’s not really deep dish pizza just a lot more bread. That’s Detroit style in a nutshell. Click here for more in depth analysis.

The memorial service for Hank Aaron was televised this week from Truist Park in Atlanta. The small numbers of family and friends allowed to attend gathered right in front of Aaron’s statue in the Monument Garden. The Commissioner of Baseball Rob Manfred noted that even if you took away Aaron’s 755 home runs he would still have over 3,000 hits. A FB friend pointed out this week that even without the 755 home runs he would still have more hits than Wade Boggs!

We’ve all seen them. Within hours of the inauguration Bernie Sanders memes had just about broken the internet. Jen Ellis, by the way, is a school teacher who knitted the mittens from repurposed sweaters and plastic bottles and gave them to Bernie back when he was on the campaign trail. She is honored that he is still wearing them but all the recent attention has been overwhelming.

A notable distinction he never wanted: Jim Gilligan was the winner of the last episode of Jeopardy hosted by Alex Trebek and the returning champ on the first show hosted by Ken Jennings. Katie Couric, Mayim Bialik and Bill Whitaker are slated to appear as guest hosts and more will be announced later. A permanent replacement for Trebek has not been announced. Each guest host serves a two week stint and the cumulative total of winner takes during that two week period is donated to a charity of the guest host’s choosing.

The headline speaks for itself. I was able to put together a year-in-review album on my personal Facebook page that focused on all the of the fun things we were able to do this past year. With very little mention of the pandemic or restrictions there were many positive moments not to be overlooked. There were plenty of 2020 memes and cartoons that we chose not to share here because there was already enough of it. We wanted to say “look here instead” and redirect focus on things positive and encouraging. You won’t hear a peep from me about what happened in D.C. this week, not because I don’t know or don’t care, but because it’s all been said already. Brevard County Fire and Rescue (FL) tweeted the dumpster fire pic and noted the irony that it was their last call of 2020. I don’t care who you are, that’s funny right there.

If you’re superstitious, the black eyed peas are meant to bring health in the new year and the collard greens (or greens of your choice) will bring wealth. I consider this meal to be traditional New Year’s Day fare. My wife decided to cook dry beans and boil down fresh collards this year, I’m usually a little lazier than that.

My birthday was two weeks ago but I have friends with birthdays on Dec. 18th, one week before Christmas, and one lucky enough to be born on December 25th. I guess in some ways that’s really special, until you get to a certain age (for me it was about 10 or 11) and you realize that kids with birthdays in the summer get presents twice a year. As you get older, birthdays don’t matter as much and maybe you’re glad that no one notices; but there may not be anything that matters more to a kid. And to have one of the most important days of your calendar year pretty much ignored by everyone… for those that don’t know, the struggle is real.

This year’s Hanukkah celebration ended last night. So about four years ago I’m watching a holiday special called Nina’s Hanukkah Adventure. The animated character that looks so much like me in the still shot above is actually Nina’s rabbi. Not only does it look like I got sucked into a cartoon the blonde hair, blued eyed lady could pass for Teresa. I cropped those those headshots and used it as my profile pic for a while.
