The Last Supper was painted in the mid 1490’s. It was not uncommon to place characters of Bible stories in contemporary settings. There is a famous work that depicts Mary holding the baby Jesus sitting next to the Holy Roman Emperor. The people at the time knew the works were not historically accurate. Very few people were literate and the art of the time, such as oil paintings and stain glass windows, illustrate the people and events of the Bible. It took Michelangelo five years to paint the 343 figures on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. There is value to studying Medieval art just keep in mind that’s it’s only around 500 years old and depicts events from 2,000 years ago. Di Vinci and Michelangelo are closer to our time than the first century A.D.

April Fool’s – Today is April 1st and you gotta be careful out there folks. The image above is an old post that appeared in my Facebook Memories this morning from all the way back in 2014. The difference is that I had to click through the following warning to see what was behind it:
There was a related article linked from USA Today explaining that no evidence exists that Chick-fil-A will be selling a steak sandwich and that the post was an old April Fool’s prank. Well you’re fact-checking an old post so it is what it is. Zuckerberg forbid anyone should have fun on social media. I feel safer already.

The time change was Sunday morning. If you changed your clocks you lost an hour of sleep, if not you might not have made it to church at all. We’re gonna give our guy above half credit. The idea of ending the time change is growing in popularity in the United States but how to do it becomes a sticking point. Most people just want it to end, and do not care which time we land on, but if asked which time we should stay on permanently there is slight preference for Daylight Savings Time (DST).

Eliud Simiyu is the self-proclaimed Jesus of Tongaren from Bungoma. Some locals have suggested he be crucified as Jesus was, reassuring him that if his claims are true he will be resurrected on the third day. Understandably he has express concern for his life. Orphaned as a child, Simiyu was struck in the head during a domestic dispute in 2009. After being released form the hospital he began preaching. He later claimed to be Jesus, identifying himself as a “divine being” and claims to have miraculous powers. On one occasion, according to witnesses, he turned water into… tea. You know what they say, it’s all fun and games until a mob wants to crucify you on Easter to see if you are really Jesus.

I mentioned that this was coming up when I wrote about announcing the call to preach 30 years ago then promptly forgot about it again. Thank you WordPress. Since March 4, 2008, there have been 1887 posts (this one will make 1888), 765,014 views and 2,540 comments. I have 750 subscribers although some of those are probably WordPress accounts that are no longer maintained or email addresses that are now defunct. If you have been any part of this journey – and you are reading this right now, presumably of your own free will – I hope you have learned something, enjoyed something or at least smiled as you shook your head. I have never started a podcast or relaunched The Master’s Table as a YouTube channel; it warms my heart to know that some people still read. So without further ado let me write something for you. You may or may not have caught these items this week:

The original purpose of the Satur-deja Vu, when it started back in 2019, was a week-in-review of posts and updates of discussions on The Master’s Table. This week there were actually enough posts to review them and one discussion update. I missed the 30 year anniversary of announcing the call to preach back in January. In 2018 Valentine’s Day and Ash Wednesday were both on February 14th. That was the first time since 1945 but it will happen again in 2024 and 2029. In 2096 Ash Wednesday will fall on Leap Day, February 29th, for the first time in the history. I finally got around to putting some thoughts in writing about the Asbury Revival, focusing more on the responses than the event itself. Here are some other news stories, fun facts and random bits that you may or may not have seen this week:

Super Bowl LVII – The Kansas City Chiefs beat the Philadelphia Eagles 38 – 35. Yes, Rihanna is pregnant again. And the 14 minute video above is a compilation of the commercials. I must have been out of the room and missed the Tubi ad that got some innocent family members and pets yelled at. The 30 second Super Bowl spot for The Flash has the Batmobile reveal missing from the full trailer, although I have watched both several times. There is a version in the montage but my vote for best commercial from this Super Bowl is this extended T Mobile ad featuring John Travolta.

Death toll continues to rise. On Monday morning I was heading to a weekly meeting of Baptist preachers and pastors. I was listening to the news on the radio about the earthquake in Turkey and Syria. At that time the number of confirmed dead was less than 2,000. By Tuesday at noon it had risen to 5,000. That number has now passed 23,000. Turkey has infrastructure and human resources in place to coordinate efforts and distribute aid as it comes from around the world. There is a US embassy there. After years of war there is none of that in Syria. There is practically no national government to speak of. Pray for victims, survivors, military forces and humanitarian relief workers. As of Friday afternoon there were still children being rescued alive. If you wish to donate, volunteer or assist in other ways be careful of scams and scammers. Use organizations you are familiar with such as Samaritan’s Purse or the global Red Cross organization.

This meme kills two birds with one stone. Thursday was Groundhog Day. Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, predicting six more weeks of winter while in the southern state of Georgia General Beauregard Lee did not. The New England States are getting what’s described as a once in a generation arctic blast this weekend but temps will bounce back up into the 40’s in just a day or two. It’s gonna be cold up north, who could have guessed? General Lee predicts early spring but except for a few days of single digits temps in December this winter has been pretty mild. We’ve had an abundance of rainfall but that keeps the temps pleasant.
Tom Brady has retired again but… there is one NFL franchise owner asking him to come back. Sort of. Robert Kraft would like Brady to sign a one-day contract with the New England Patriots so he can retire, for good, from that franchise.

Girl Scout Cookies come from two bakeries in the United States, ABC Bakers in Richmond, VA and Little Brownie Bakers in Louisville, KY. There was either a crash that caused the fire or it may have just been a fire on US 27 in Pendleton, KY, on Thursday morning. That’s about half an hour from Louisville. So the bad news is that thousands of boxes of Girl Scout cookies were destroyed in a vehicle fire. The good news is that Little Brownie Bakers produces 450 million Thin Mints each day. But you’re right, it’s still sad.
