Welcome to the World

A straw man is an argument set up by one’s opponent that can easily be defeated.  This video is quite condemning of Christianity as an organized religion.  If all these things were true I probably wouldn’t be a Christian either.  Watch the video a couple of times, and perhaps take a minute to calm down.  You may need a dose of Maalox, then consider these counter points:

  • You WERE NOT born worthless.  If Christians are teaching this as doctrine they need to be slapped, not the makers of this film.  You are fearfully and wonderfully made in the image of God.  There is no person without worth, regardless of the judgements passed by the world or by Christians. From the Mouths of Babes

Our daughter Johannah is 26 months.  This past Sunday she looks at the mural behind our baptistry and says “Jesus is taking a bubble bath.”

It was adorable at the time, perhaps because a bubble bath is the only kind of bath she knows about.  It took me three days to realize she can recognize pictures of Jesus when she sees them.  Wow.

Moses vs. God

God speaks to Moses through the burning bush in Exodus 3.  God has heard the cry of the Hebrews slaves, and remembers his covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.  The affliction and time table described in Genesis 15 has been accomplished, and God is ready to lead his people out of Egypt and to the promised land.  The only thing standing in the way of Moses leading them is out is… Moses.  He goes point/counterpoint with God, listing new objections as God responds to each. Recommended: Alltop

If you’ve never heard of Alltop, it is an aggregator of sorts.  It is actually a collection aggrgators, and they can be arranged by the user depending on what it is you want to find.  The Christianity page at Alltop is a collection of RSS feeds from a wide variety of Christian blogs and websites.  Tall Skinny Kiwi and Internet Monk are there, for example.  You will also find dozens of others that you may never have stumbled across otherwise.

I may add the page to the Useful Resources list on my sidebar in the near future.  Go explore, you may find yourself with a new blog friend or two soon.  Just don’t forget to come back sometime (seeing as how I’m not on it).

Christ Centered

Take a good look at da Vinci’s portrait The Last Supper.  What is the first thing you notice?  It is probably Jesus.  Everything about this picture is designed to draw your attention to him.  I want my blog to be “God honoring” and “Christ centered” because that’s what the Christian life should be like.  What follows is the 3-point sermon on why.

1) Jesus’ Ministry was Christ Centered

Jesus was all about humility, having the heart of a servant and doing nothing but directing people toward God.  But there is no getting around the fact that Jesus is the way to get to God.  Jesus himself said “I am the way, the truth and the life.  No one comes to the Father except through me.”   Continue reading

The Pat Robertson Antidote

By now everyone has heard about Pat Robertson and his advice to those with Alzheimer’s spouses.  For anyone up in arms over the incident, or for those not sure if his advice is best, I recommend watching The Notebook.

James Garner is the Pat Robertson antidote.

What Makes Us Stronger: Perspective On 9/11

The goal of terrorism is to disrupt the normal activities of a group by paralyzing its members with fear.  A decade later we can look back on the terror attacks of 9/11 with both historic and Christian perspective.

The World Trade Center towers in New York represented the financial strength of capitalism.  The Pentagon in D.C. is the headquarters of our nation’s military prowess.  And while the target of Flight 93 is subject to speculation, the White House and Capitol buildings are the literal seat of our Federal Government.  Not only would large numbers of individuals be injured and killed, our very institutions would also be under attack.  Nearly 3,000 lives ended as a direct result of terrorist action, a reality that should not be downplayed.  But in another sense the ultimate goal of the 9/11 terrorists was never achieved.   Continue reading

“Not-Quite-Public” Television

A couple of weeks ago I posted a hilarious video of Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Riders singing “Atheists Don’t Have No Songs” on Austin City Limits.  That YouTube video now displays this message:

Apparently “public” television isn’t as public as we all thought it was. Public television is paid for the members who support it, rather than by the sell of commercial airtime.  It is available for free to the public.  Copyright holders own certain intellectual property and do not give it away in order to make a profit.  It it’s public why is there a copyright claim to be made?

This is one of the best videos of any kind I’ve seen on the internet in a long time.  Unfortunately I can’t see it again nor show it to anybody else.  Thank you Texas, and the good people of Not-So-Public After All Television.

The Strange Relationship Between Abortion and the Death Penalty

The focus of this blog is religion and theology, and I try not to promote a political agenda.  I’ve always found something a bit odd though.  The same people – and I will try not to give them a label – the same people that oppose the death penalty often favor abortion rights.  Their logic astounds me.
