Happy Thanksgiving

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights…”  -James 1:17

I want to wish everyone a Happy Thanksgiving.  We may not have every single thing we might wish for, be we have been richly, richly blessed.  The unemployment rate is up to 6%, but in some nations the unemployment rate is typically 96% or so.  Over half of the world’s population lives on less than the equivalent of $2 per day.  We’re doing pretty well.  Let’s remember where blesings come from.

You can read my Thanksgiving sermon from Sunday.  I’ve also started blogging Christmas.

The Great Pumpkin Proposes a Toast

As hard as it may be to believe, there was a time when the InternetMonk was not the stuffy old grouch he is today.  Prove it to yourself by reading this post, entitled The Great Pumpkin Proposes a Toast, hidden away deep in the IM archives.  I do the dirty work so you don’t have to.  Happy Halloween.

Parable of the Talents

Jesus gave many different analogies of what the Kingdom of God is like.  In Matthew 25 we read the parable of the talents.  After he finishes this parable, he goes on to describe the final judgement.  Earlier in chp. 25 is the parable of the wise and foolish virgins, which teaches us to always be prepared.  We do not know the day and hour of his return; but he will return.  The parable of the talents is a lesson to believers to take good care of what has been entrusted to them. Pray for Mom

Please pray for my mother.  I don’t have a pic on my laptop.  In 2003, she had a massive heart attack and quadruple bypass surgery.  She went to the ER tonight, and the doctors did an EKG they didn’t like the look of.  At this time (Thursday evening, Oct. 16), she is in a room for observation waiting to see her regular cardiologist tomorrow.

UPDATE: Thank you everyone that prayed.  Mom is back at home, there seems to be nothing wrong.  She is visiting her regular family doctor on Tuesday.  It turns out she had not felt well for a few days, so her symptoms may have just been from her illness, not signs of a heart attack.  BTW, Mom is 68, so we think it pays to be careful.  She does have 4 heart by-passes, after all.  Thanks again for your prayers, I would appreciate you mentioning her in prayer from time to time.  (Her name is Ellen Bunch.)

The Villany of Christopher Columbus

UPDATE: Columbus Day is coming up and that is always the busiest day of the year for this blog post.  I would like to offer a disclaimer; I realize the information presented here is one-sided.  My goal was to offset some of the hero worship associated with Christopher Columbus.  All the good stuff you’ve probably heard before.  I simply want informed readers to balance what they already know with these facts, which perhaps you are hearing about for the first time.

As a history teacher, I feel obligated to inform the masses that Columbus was a dirty old man.  I’m sure in the fifth grade, your history book had a little painting of Christopher Columbus, all smiles as he met the Native Americans, and they shook hands.  We celebrate Columbus Day to recognize his discovery of the New World.  Back that tape up in your mind, let me give you some more facts.

RT’s Place

After RT left a comment or two, I checked out his blog to get to know him better (I hope RT is a him.  If not, sorry girl.)  I found this post particularly amusing, comparing the salaries of teachers with those of state legislators.  He also asks some pointed questions about the requirements of both to keep a job.  Interesting stuff.  It’s good to make new friends, and we might soon be adding RT to the blogroll.

Show Us a Sign

This is a real church sign located not far from Cleveland, Ohio.  Mike Frizzell  has been providing us with humorous and amusing church signs for some time in a regular bit he calls Signs of the Times.  I couldn’t resist sharing this one also.  The church says it is meant to be a “friendly” reminder to teens that the Bible doesn’t condone homosexuality.  Many have misunderstood the sign’s meaning, or are unfamiliar with the pop song it is a reference to.  Read the whole story here  from Fox News.

Double Portion

Elisha is the Old Testament figure that asked to be granted a “double portion” of the spirit that Elijah had.  The Double Portion pictured here is a Southern Gospel group from Canada of all places.  They record in Nashville, frequent the National Quartet Convention, and tour in the United States on a regular basis.  We got to see them last night for the first time since 2003.  They do a whole family act (with a total of 8 kids).  The kids range in age from 20 to infant, and the entire family is blessed musically.  I recommend seeing them if you get the chance.  They sing, preach, and live the gospel message.

Where’s the Love?

I wanted to share this classic video from the Blayed Eyed Peas, but the best I can do is show a preview. You can click this link to watch the entire video. There’s a lot of Gospel in this pop.

Vodpod videos no longer available.

Road Trip

On a personal note, my wife and I will be out of town for almost 2 weeks.  I’m taking my laptop, but don’t know where and when I’ll be online.  I may not be coming to the Table as often.  There’s nearly 100 posts in the archives, check out my friends on the blogroll.  I will be trying to finish my book and riding my motorcycle.  I’m living the American dream; God is good.  If I make it back alive, we’ll see you in August.

For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s.   Romans 14:8
