Read the Bible: Exodus 30

God is still giving Moses instructions about how to furnish the tabernacle. The bronze wash basin in the lower left of this image, and the altar of incense in front of the veil, are described in this chapter.

Exodus 30

“You shall make an altar to burn incense on: of acacia wood you shall make it.

Read the Bible: Exodus 29

Chapter 28 described how to make the garments for Aaron and his sons to wear as they minister in the office of the priesthood. This chapter instructions Moses to put the garments on them and consecrate them. This is the ordination service but we are still receiving instructions and not doing any of the things yet.

Exodus 29

“This is what you shall do to consecrate them, to serve me in the priest’s office: Take one bull and two rams without blemish,

This is a longer chapter than some we have read recently and it’s all about the garments Aaron and his sons are to wear as they serve as priests.

Exodus 28

“Take your brother Aaron and his sons with him from among the children of Israel, that he may serve me in the priest’s office, Aaron and his sons Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.

Read the Bible: Exodus 24

Moses tells the people everything God said. He wrote it all in a book and read it to them. Both times they say “All that God has said we will do.” Sacrifices are made, blood is sprinkled, and 74 men go up the mountain and see God. He then calls on Moses alone to come closer.

Exodus 24

He said to Moses “Come up to the LORD, you and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel; and worship at a distance.

Read the Bible: Exodus 19

We are getting very close to the Law being given, beginning with the 10 Commandments, at Mount Sinai. In this chapter the people are warned to keep their distance, they sanctify themselves for three days and Moses is called up the mountain with Aaron to meet God.

Exodus 19

In the third month, on the same day of the month the children of Israel had gone forth out of the land of Egypt, they came into the wilderness of Sinai.

Read the Bible: Exodus 7

Exodus 7 is exciting stuff. There is a side note in the text about Moses’s age that reminded me to talk about the timeline of his life. Then Moses and Aaron appear before Pharaoh and thrown down. Aaron literally “throws down” his staff and it becomes a serpent. The magicians of Egypt can do the same thing but it’s not as cool as what Aaron’s staff does.

Exodus 7

The Lord said to Moses “See, I have made you like God to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron will be your prophet.

Read the Bible: Exodus 4

Moses raised two objections in Exodus 3 while speaking with God at the burning bush: Who am I that I should appear before Pharaoh and who will I say sent me? There will be two more specific objections and one “but I don’t want to.” Has anyone thought about the question from yesterday: Exactly who is Moses talking to at the burning bush?

Exodus 4

Moses answered and said “But they will not believe me, nor listen to my voice, for they will say ‘The Lord did not appear to you.’”

Aaron’s Golden Calf

golden calf“Up, make us gods who shall go before us. As for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.”

Begin by reading Exodus 32:1-6. The Hebrews demanded that Aaron make gods for them to worship and remarkably Aaron did so. Up until this point of the Exodus narrative Aaron had been as the spoken voice of God to the people of Israel. God would instruct Moses, Moses would share the commands with Aaron, and Aaron would in turn relay all that God had said to the people. They had all witnessed the plagues in Egypt, miraculously crossed the Red Sea, and trembled in fear as smoke and fire descended onto Mount Sinai. They had not yet received the written tablets but the words of the Ten Commandments had been spoken by God in Exodus 20. Before and after the commandments were listed all the congregation of Israel said together “All that you say we will do.” So why after all that would they risk provoking the anger of God by making an idol to worship? Moses vs. God

God speaks to Moses through the burning bush in Exodus 3.  God has heard the cry of the Hebrews slaves, and remembers his covenant with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.  The affliction and time table described in Genesis 15 has been accomplished, and God is ready to lead his people out of Egypt and to the promised land.  The only thing standing in the way of Moses leading them is out is… Moses.  He goes point/counterpoint with God, listing new objections as God responds to each.
