Read the Bible: Genesis 1

This is the first post in a new series, an ambitious project to read one chapter of the Bible each day for the next 1,189 days. Realistically we will probably miss a day here or there. Some chapters are incredibly long; so we may add a few days by splitting them up but it would also be possible to read more than one of the shorter chapters to make that time up. It will take a little over three years in either case. The point is, we are not in a hurry.

Before starting the player I recommend opening a Bible to Genesis 1 and following along. Bible Gateway is an excellent resource online offering several English translations. Youversion is a popular Bible app or, hear me out, maybe open an actual Bible. What version will I be reading? Well… for the purposes of publishing this blog/podcast I need to read something in the public domain, such as the KJV or ASV. The Bible says what the Bible says but I am basically reading from the KJV text while updating a bit of archaic language. Thee and thine becomes you and your. In Genesis 1, most modern translations use expanse rather than firmament. If there is ever an issue where the translations offer a different meaning, we will discuss the differences and the thought process that led to divergent texts.

Let’s get to it. After the first couple of posts there will be less introduction and explanation. The Bible was written with a purpose. Our goal is simple: to read the Bible and see what God has to say.

Time and Eternity

God created time. Whether you believe in a literal seven day creation week or take a more symbolic view of those “days” I would direct your attention to Genesis 1.

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. And God saw that the light was good. And God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day. -Gen. 1:1-5

Let’s Talk About Eternity

The Heritage Singers once said “Forever is a long, long time.” That’s the way many of us probably think about eternity; a very, very long time. A verse of Amazing Grace starts out “When we’ve been there 10,000 years…” The truth is that eternity takes place outside of time. It’s not made up all time but is rather the exact opposite of time.

Bible Survey, Creation Week

bible-pagesIt’s done!  The much awaited first installment of Bible Survey, Creation Week, is now online.

The first 12 chapters of Genesis cover a period of centuries, and present us with some major events from early history.  The Gen. 1 post is lengthy, and this looks like it may be a slow go for a few posts.  After we meet Abraham in Gen. 12, we should be able to take wings and fly.  Here is an excerpt:

God is all-powerful, and created all that exist from nothing, confirmed by Heb. 11:3  and Rev. 4:11.  Critics might argue that Hebrew is an ancient, difficult language, and that no original copies survive due to the passage of time.  Many times, however, the truths of the Old Testament are quoted, illustrated, or otherwise affirmed by the authors of the New Testament.  Their writings are more recent, plentiful, and easier translated from Greek and/or Aramaic.  That God created the universe and all that is in it is one of those fundamental truths.
