Pastor Shane Parrot of Heritage Baptist Church led one of the prayers at AdventHealth Gordon’s public gathering on the National Day of Prayer. As mentioned in Thursday morning’s Read the Bible podcast, I was at the Rome Area Prayer Breakfast to hear Eric Metaxas and this event in Calhoun at noon. Living the Christian life the right way involves a balance of boldness and meekness. Meeting together in a public place that is highly visible is a way to stand up for what we believe in but bowing in prayer as we ask God for anything is a confession that he can and we can’t.

Thursday was the National Day of Prayer in the US and I wrote a post about all of the day’s activities that I took part in.

I mentioned the National Day of Prayer last week and even included a link to the National Day of Prayer Task Force website. Shown above is the poster for one of two events I will be attending. The Rome Area Prayer Breakfast, which I think I mentioned, has invited Lee Strobel to speak this year. The Advent Health prayer event will have several individuals from the community offer specific prayers for ministers, educatators, government officials, etc then a corporate prayer time. Chances are there is an event in your area; check with your church leaders and extend your search to include newspaper and radio (and their respective online presence) if necessary.

Jason Britt at Calhoun FBC – There are a couple of reasons that I blog. Reaching a larger audience than I would be able to person is a big part of it. I’ve made blog friends in Canada, Israel and Australia and engaged many others in discussion and debate. Blogging also serves my need to record and catalogue things. Going through the archives and reading old posts gives me perspective of my own spiritual journey. I’m reaching that age where if I don’t write it down it didn’t happen, or in some cases will not happen.

Then he bought Twitter. Maybe it’s my age, the rural setting I live in or the fact I’m not a celebrity type with a million followers but I just don’t get people freaking out about his acquisition of a social media platform. Jameela Jamil said in what she vows is her last tweet: “I fear this free speech bid is going to help this hell platform reach its final form of totally lawless hate, bigotry, and misogyny. Best of luck.” George Takei pledged to stay, Tweeting “Should this place become more toxic, I pledge to strive even harder to lift up reason, science, compassion and the rule of law. The struggle against fascism, misinformation, and hate requires tough fighters.”

Happy Mother’s Day. Easter was different this year and Mother’s Day is about to be as well. This is the card I will be delivering to our mothers at Unity Baptist along with a gift. We will not meet in person for worship for another few weeks, at least. The picture was taken last Sunday of the flowers around the church sign on the front lawn. They return every spring whether we are there to see them or not. Continue reading

Today is the annual National Day of Prayer. In years past I would encourage you to find a group event and join them in person and in prayer. It should come as no surprise that this year things are different. Continue reading

Doubletake 5-4-19

Screenshot 2019-05-03 at 8.12.43 PMFirst, let me marvel over the fact I have posted each day this week. I don’t know when The Master’s Table last published five days in a row.

So what is this? This is a look back at the past week. Some things I wrote about, others were in the news or perhaps happened on other blogs. Basically it’s a new project that I will likely start and then not follow through on. But The Master’s Table started out as a new project in 2008, Happy Monday was another in 2012. I may have more beginnings than finished projects but every task I have ever seen through to completion had a beginning. There is really no other way to start. Continue reading

If I went to every conference, seminar and retreat that I get invitations to I would never be at home. It wouldn’t take but a few weeks of missing church to get fired, seeing as how I am the pastor and what not. Having said that, I probably should make time for more of those than I do. So it was a pleasure on the National Day of Prayer to hear some good preaching. Continue reading

National Day of Prayer

UPDATE: This post talks about the persecuted church and what life is like for some Christians around the world. In his address today President Obama said in part:  “As we give thanks for our liberties, we must never forget those around the world, including Americans, who are being held or persecuted because of their convictions. Let us remember all prisoners of conscience today, whatever their faiths or beliefs and wherever they are held. Let us continue to take every action within our power to secure their release. And let us carry forward our Nation’s tradition of religious liberty, which protects Americans’ rights to pray and to practice our faiths as we see fit.”  Continue reading
