Did Noah Preach?

arkI was reading Jon Bloom this morning at the Desiring God blog. The title of the post is The Folly of what Noah Preached and it compares the message preached by Noah to the New Testament sermons of which Paul said “For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” (1 Corinthians 1:18 ESV) He draws a parallel between Noah’s sermon to repent and get on the ark and our sermon to repent and believe in the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In both cases judgement was announced and a plan of salvation offered.

Desiring God is one of the few blogs I read that does not allow readers to comment. So here is my comment: I can’t find evidence that Noah preached any such sermon. It’s just not in the Bible. Bloom’s post is based on Hebrews 11:7 which reads: Continue reading

The Fourth Man in the Fire

Screenshot 2013-03-10 at 2.19.14 PMIn Daniel chapter 3, Shadrack, Meshach and Abednego were called to appear before King Nebuchadnezzar. They were charged with not worshiping the gods of Babylon nor bowing down the golden image of Nebuchadnezzar himself. He is willing to give them another chance, and if they will bow down then all will be well. But instead:

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego answered and said to the king, “O Nebuchadnezzar, we have no need to answer you in this matter. If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.”  -Daniel 3:16-18 Continue reading

Happy Monday

Russell Crowe will play Noah.  This “first look” pic was Tweeted by director Mark Morning.  This film is set to be released spring 2014.  (Russell looks good, but he’s no Steve Carell.)

It is no longer illegal for women in North Korea to ride bicycles.  The law was about 20 years old, and truth be told was probably not enforced outside of Pyongyang.  But still… progress?

Many states in the South are enjoying the “cold front” that came through this weekend.  By cold I mean daytime highs are in the upper 80’s.  School has started, the weather is almost fall-like, and my wife wants high-school football to start. Continue reading

Bible Survey: Tower of Babel

bible-pagesI haven’t posted to Bible Survey in over a month.  I thought it would take a while to get through the Bible, at this rate it will take forever and ever.  I hope there’s Internet access in Heaven.

The Tower of Babel story creates more questions for some than it answers.  Is the story literal, or just of way of simplifying things?  Why does Genesis 10 talk about nations and languages, and then chp. 11 says that all people were of one language?  Can we prove the Bible is true?  Join me at Bible Survey to explore these and other and issues.

Bible Survey, The Flood

bible-pagesWhen I set out to begin Bible Survey, I said that it would not be a verse by verse commentary on the entire Bible.  Well, the problem is that I was doing almost exactly that.  I’m working on it.

The Flood, Gen. 6-8  is now available.  I invite you to join this journey through the Bible, and welcome an open discussion in the comments.  Did the flood really happen, was it a global or local event, how did Noah get all the animals on the ark?  Did the ark look like a boat, or is the “shoe box” design more accurate?  Hit me.
