We can share scripture, prayers and words of encouragement but you have to actually drink the coffee yourself.
This is Happy Monday #409.

Continue readingThe headline speaks for itself. I was able to put together a year-in-review album on my personal Facebook page that focused on all the of the fun things we were able to do this past year. With very little mention of the pandemic or restrictions there were many positive moments not to be overlooked. There were plenty of 2020 memes and cartoons that we chose not to share here because there was already enough of it. We wanted to say “look here instead” and redirect focus on things positive and encouraging. You won’t hear a peep from me about what happened in D.C. this week, not because I don’t know or don’t care, but because it’s all been said already. Brevard County Fire and Rescue (FL) tweeted the dumpster fire pic and noted the irony that it was their last call of 2020. I don’t care who you are, that’s funny right there.
Continue readingThe Internet Monk website has come to the end of it’s 20 year run. Michael Spencer started blogging around the time of the 2000 election cycles (year of the hanging chads). After his passing in 2010, Chaplain Mike and other contributors continued the online discussion for another 10 years. There have been a lot of long sad goodbyes again in recent weeks, reminded me a lot of 2010 which doesn’t seem like that long ago.
I started re-posting these Internet Monk Radio podcasts a few months ago with no idea the end of the Internet Monk road was just around the corner. Because of Michael Spencer was my long sad goodbye, originally posted on Feb. 1, 2010. This project to archive and share the podcast episodes will continue until I work through my cache. Several people are downloading them each week so I can verify they are popular still.
Brief mentions of Drew Marshall radio show, an interview in Modern Reformation magazine and a podcast interview on SBC Voices. Some discussion of Michael’s personal history and the roles we each play. The bulk of the discussion is on the difference between Catholics and Evangelicals.
If you’re superstitious, the black eyed peas are meant to bring health in the new year and the collard greens (or greens of your choice) will bring wealth. I consider this meal to be traditional New Year’s Day fare. My wife decided to cook dry beans and boil down fresh collards this year, I’m usually a little lazier than that.
Continue readingThis episode was originally published in 2008 shortly after the election of Barack Obama. That’s old news but Michael Spencer shares insight and commentary about how elections in the United States differ from those in many other countries. His discussion of how current news events lead us to questions that create opportunities to share the gospel offers wisdom that is timeless.
My birthday was two weeks ago but I have friends with birthdays on Dec. 18th, one week before Christmas, and one lucky enough to be born on December 25th. I guess in some ways that’s really special, until you get to a certain age (for me it was about 10 or 11) and you realize that kids with birthdays in the summer get presents twice a year. As you get older, birthdays don’t matter as much and maybe you’re glad that no one notices; but there may not be anything that matters more to a kid. And to have one of the most important days of your calendar year pretty much ignored by everyone… for those that don’t know, the struggle is real.
Continue readingToday is Christmas Eve but after a chaotic period in early December I’m trying to stay committed to posting on schedule. That means a discussion on Halloween and a talk about integrity. We hope you enjoy these blasts from the past. Have a safe and happy Christmas Day.
When a multitude of the heavenly host appeared to a group of shepherds out in the field, they proclaimed “Peace on Earth, goodwill toward men.” Someone may take a critical look at the world today and ask “Where is it? I don’t see peace on Earth.” The first thing we need to do is examine what this group of messengers were really saying. The full text of Luke 2:14 is “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” Your translation of choice may not include among those with whom he is pleased so let’s not even go there. These angels are worshipping. They proclaim Glory to God in the highest which we do not see everywhere in the world today. The creation points to God’s glory but the majority of people walking the face of the earth do not acknowledge God. The angels were announcing the birth of the Messiah/Christ so peace on earth could be similar to Jesus himself saying “The Kingdom of God is at hand.” He certainly was. So the angels did not prophesy in so many words “There is going to be peace on earth” or “from now on there will be peace on earth and goodwill everywhere you look.” But I still want to address these two questions: Is there or can there be peace on earth? Will there ever be peace over the whole earth?
